Chapter 14 - The Transit Station Drop

The neon lights of the downtown transit station buzzed faintly in the damp pre-dawn air, casting an eerie greenish glow over the empty concourse. The concrete floor echoed with every footstep Sarah, Marcus, and Caleb took as they hurried toward the rows of rusted gray metal lockers lining the back wall near the subterranean train platforms.

Sarah kept her hand tightly clenched around the metal flash drive in her coat pocket, her eyes darting nervously toward the security cameras mounted above the entrance. "If the police are looking for David, they'll be tracking our plates. We don't have much time."

"We have all the time we need," Caleb said calmly, stopping in front of locker number 214. He pulled a heavy brass key from his jacket pocket—the very key David had entrusted to him fifteen years ago before their paths split in blood and betrayal. "Your husband was smart, Sarah. He knew that one day the past would catch up to him. This locker holds the original audit logs that prove not only his innocence in the modern embezzlement, but also the names of every corrupt federal official currently taking bribes to frame him."

Marcus stepped up beside his uncle, his expression hard, devoid of the teenage distraction he had started the night with. "And if we turn this in to the right people... Dad comes home?"

Caleb paused, looking down at his nephew with a complex mix of regret and reluctant admiration. "He comes home, kid. But he’s going to have to face the music for the small stuff he actually did do years ago. There’s no magic wand that erases a life built on secrets. But he won't die in a maximum-security cell for something he didn't do."

Sarah inserted the key into the heavy iron lock, turning it with a satisfying mechanical click. The steel door swung open smoothly, revealing a small, dusty leather briefcase sitting inside on the concrete shelf.

Before Sarah could reach inside to grab the briefcase, the harsh sound of clicking heels echoed down the concourse behind them. Three men in identical dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the stairway, their hands resting ominously inside their suit jackets.

"Step away from the locker, Mrs. Miller," a cold, clipped voice echoed through the empty station, cutting off any chance of escape.
