Chapter 5 - Broken Glass and Old Secrets

The sharp crash of shattering glass echoed through the open-plan house, cutting off their escape route toward the utility exit. Sarah gasped, stumbling backward against the hallway wall, while Marcus threw himself in front of her defensively. From the kitchen came the distinct sound of heavy boots crunching over broken window glass and spilled ceramic mugs.
David didn't wait. He sprinted past the living room sofa, gripping the heavy metal flashlight like a club as he rounded the corner into the kitchen. "Get out of my house!" David roared, lunging into the dim space.
A dark figure stood near the sink, silhouetted by the moonlight pouring through the broken window. The intruder didn't run or attack; instead, he raised his hands slowly, holding a familiar black smartphone in one palm. The ambient light caught the metallic glint of a silver wristwatch on the intruder's wrist—a watch David recognized instantly from a photograph he hadn't seen in over a decade.
"Put the light down, David," a rough, gravelly voice echoed from the shadows. "You haven't changed much, but you sure picked a quiet neighborhood to hide out in."
David stopped dead in his tracks, the metal flashlight slipping an inch in his sweating palm. The rigid, defensive posture in his shoulders melted into a look of absolute, unadulterated shock. He lowered the flashlight slowly, his breathing turning shallow and ragged.
Marcus peeked around the kitchen doorway, his eyes wide as he looked at his father’s frozen expression. "Dad? Who is that? Do you know him?"
The intruder stepped forward into the dim light of the overhead hood, revealing a jagged scar running along the left side of his jawline. It was a face from David’s past, a face buried beneath years of safe suburban routines, quiet family dinners, and carefully constructed lies.
"I told you a long time ago, little brother," the man said with a cold, humorless smirk, tossing the phone onto the kitchen counter. "You can run from the syndicate, but you can't erase your name."
May you like
Sarah stepped into the kitchen, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and betrayal as she stared at her husband. "Little brother? David... what is he talking about?"
