Chapter 6: The Digital Lifeline

Maya pressed her back harder against the hallway wall, her eyes locked on the progress bar crawling across her diagnostic tablet. Ninety-eight percent. The secondary camera feed from the fire sprinkler housing was almost fully decrypted. She could see the wide-angle view of the floor: Eleanor dropping her own pearl necklace, deliberately snapping the silk string with a small pair of travel scissors pulled from her handbag, before collapsing onto the hardwood and cueing her own waterworks. The entire sequence was captured in crisp, unedited 4K resolution, complete with audio of Eleanor whispering to herself, ‘Make it look real, Julian’s watching.’
A soft chime echoed from Maya’s tablet as the download completed. The physical evidence of the conspiracy was secured, residing safely in the local memory of a device that could not be wiped by remote server commands. But holding the truth and deploying it effectively were two entirely different maneuvers. If Maya simply walked into that suite right now, Marcus Vance would likely snatch her tablet or force her deletion under the threat of institutional retaliation from the hotel’s corrupt upper management, who were clearly tied to the Sterling family's financial orbit.
Inside the room, the confrontation was reaching a boiling point. Clara’s hand emerged from the interior pocket of her white lace gown, not holding a weapon, but holding the small black flash drive out like a shield.
"You think you've cornered me," Clara said, her tone level, cutting through the heavy air with surgical precision. "You think a viral video and a few fabricated tears are going to erase two years of audited financials. Julian, look at me. Did you really think I wouldn't audit the holding accounts after you transferred fifty thousand dollars to an offshore Cayman shell last Tuesday?"
Julian recoiled as if struck physically. His hazel eyes widened in sheer panic. The green velvet tuxedo jacket strained against his chest as he took an involuntary step backward. "How... how could you possibly know about that?"

"Because I built the firewall you tried to break through," Clara replied coldly. "And unlike your mother's pearls, my security protocols don't shatter when you drop them."
Marcus Vance lowered his phone entirely, his professional demeanor slipping for the first time. He exchanged a sharp, evaluating glance with Eleanor. The narrative wasn't going according to script anymore. The target was fighting back with live ammunition.
