Chapter 12

The penthouse boardroom smelled of aged mahogany, expensive leather, and cold panic. Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the massive, twelve-seat conference table, his smartphone pressed so hard against his ear that his knuckles were entirely bloodless. Across from him, three senior members of the Sterling Logistics board of directors sat in stone-faced silence, their tablets propped up before them, displaying the paused freeze-frame of Eleanor’s amateurish pearl-snapping performance.

When the private elevator chime chimed softly at the end of the secure hallway, every head in the room snapped toward the frosted glass double doors. The heavy electronic lock clicked open, and Clara walked into the boardroom, flanked by Maya.

Arthur scrambled up from his chair, his face mottled with fury and desperation. "Clara! Thank God. Look, this entire nightmare downstairs is a misunderstanding—a smear campaign orchestrated by a disgruntled PR firm! Julian is devastated, your wedding can still be salvaged if we just—"

"Save your breath, Arthur," Clara interrupted, her voice cutting through the heavy air with the authority of a seasoned chief executive. She didn't raise her voice, but the sheer weight of her calm confidence silenced him instantly. She walked directly to the empty seat at the opposite end of the mahogany table—the seat traditionally reserved for the majority voting shareholder.

Maya stepped forward, placing her diagnostic tablet onto the center of the table and tapping the interface to connect directly to the boardroom’s overhead projector. Instantly, the high-definition architectural schematics of Clara’s proprietary logistics network flashed across the large screen, alongside the encrypted paper trail of Arthur’s illicit offshore wire transfers.

"You tried to execute a forced corporate buyout by staging a domestic assault and exploiting a predatory prenuptial forfeiture clause," Clara stated, her eyes locking onto Arthur’s panicked gaze. "Unfortunately for you, my security protocols outpaced your ambition by a margin of about forty minutes."

One of the senior board directors, a woman with silver hair and a lifetime of corporate governance experience, adjusted her reading glasses and looked directly at Arthur. "Is this true, Arthur? Did you authorize the diversion of operational funds to finance a smear campaign against our majority stakeholder?"

Arthur opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The empire was built on paper, and the paper had just caught fire.
