Chapter 5: The Velvet Trap

Inside the suite, the silence following Marcus’s tactical slip was deafening. Julian flinched, a microscopic twitch of his jaw betraying his sudden anxiety as he glanced sideways at Marcus. The fixer simply smiled, lowering his phone slightly and shaking his head in a subtle warning for Julian to maintain his composure.

"What did he just call you?" Clara asked, her voice steady now, stripped of all fear. She stepped forward, the heavy train of her white lace wedding gown whispering against the hardwood floor. The contrast between her pristine bridal attire and the calculated malice of the three people arrayed against her was stark, cinematic, and profoundly tragic. "Is that why we're here, Julian? Did your family's shipping empire go under last quarter? Did you need my signature on the corporate dissolution papers, or did you just need me to look like a violent lunatic so the pre-nup's forfeiture clause would legally strip me of my company?"

Julian’s face went pale. The deep green velvet of his tuxedo jacket suddenly seemed too hot, his shoulders hunching inward as the fragile illusion of his moral superiority cracked. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out—only a shallow, ragged gasp of air.

On the stool, Eleanor shifted uncomfortably, her performance faltering under the weight of actual exposure. The theatrical weeping was gone, replaced by a cold, reptilian stare. She stood up from the stool, smoothing her brown satin dress with trembling fingers, her earlier fragility vanishing into thin air.

"You were always too ambitious for our family, Clara," Eleanor said, her voice dropping the maternal cadence entirely, turning sharp and venomous. "A woman with your background doesn't belong at the head of a multi-million-dollar logistics firm. You should have taken the quiet settlement we offered six months ago."

Marcus raised his phone again, the red recording light blinking mockingly. "It's too late for settlements, Eleanor. The clip is already queued for release on three separate high-traffic syndicates. In ten minutes, her reputation won't just be damaged; it will be completely incinerated."

Clara didn't flinch. She reached behind her back, her fingers finding the small, hidden pocket sewn into the interior lining of her lace gown. Her fingers closed around a small, rectangular flash drive—the cold storage backup of every corporate tax return, bank transfer, and illicit communication Julian had tried to delete from her server the night before.
