Chapter 5

The morning sun broke over the jagged cliffs of the Hudson River, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate. Inside the nursery, Clara cooed softly, batting at a mobile of hand-painted wooden birds while Mrs. Gable hummed a gentle lullaby. Downstairs in the kitchen, Elena was reviewing the freshly downloaded files over a cup of tea when the smart-home security panel on the wall suddenly beeped twice.
Elena froze. The motion sensors at the outer perimeter gate had just been triggered. Not by an ordinary vehicle, but by two heavy black SUVs moving slowly up the private drive without headlights.
"Mrs. Gable," Elena called out, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper as she walked quickly toward the hallway. "Take Clara to the panic room behind the library. Lock the steel door and do not open it for anyone except me or Arthur."
Mrs. Gable didn’t hesitate. She knew the history of the house, and she knew the danger Elena and the baby were in. Scooping the infant into her arms, the housekeeper hurried down the back corridor toward the reinforced sanctuary.
Elena moved to the foyer, her hand sliding beneath the mahogany console table where a heavy, matte-black Glock 19 rested in a custom leather holster. She checked the magazine—fully loaded—and racked a round into the chamber with a crisp, mechanical click.
Outside, heavy boots crunched loudly across the gravel driveway. A moment later, the thick glass of the front double doors shattered inward as the deadbolts were blown out with a controlled breaching charge. Smoke and splintered wood filled the grand entryway.
Three men in tactical gear stepped through the wreckage, their faces obscured by black balaclavas, assault rifles raised and sweeping the room. They moved with terrifying efficiency, scanning the high ceilings and darkened corners.
"Clear the ground floor," a harsh voice barked through a comms unit. "Sweep every room. The target and the child are here."
Elena stepped out from the shadows of the sweeping staircase, her stance balanced, her arms extended, holding the pistol with absolute calm. She wore a simple dark grey utility jumpsuit and combat boots—a stark contrast to the elegant velvet evening gown of the night before, but infinitely more dangerous.

"You boys took a wrong turn at the gate," Elena said, her voice cutting through the lingering haze of smoke.
The lead mercenary whipped his rifle around, but Elena was already moving, diving off to the side as a burst of automatic gunfire chewed into the wooden banister where she had stood a second before. The war for the Vance empire had arrived at her front door, and she was ready to wage it.
