Chapter 4

The digital infiltration of Sterling Corporation’s main server began at precisely 3:14 AM. Elena sat cross-legged in the leather armchair of the Hudson estate study, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with rhythmic precision. The encrypted flash drive was acting as a bridge, bypassing the multi-layered corporate firewalls by exploiting a legacy backdoor Julian had coded into the mainframe years ago during a merger.

On the center monitor, a command-line interface flickered with green text. Files were downloading in encrypted blocks: shipping manifests, customs bypass logs, and recorded board meetings where the Sterling executives casually discussed the hostile takeover of Vance Maritime.

Suddenly, a red warning box flashed across the screen. Intrusion Detected: Counter-Trace Initiated from IP Address 192.88.99.1.

Elena didn’t flinch. She had anticipated their automated security protocols. Instead of disconnecting, she routed a counter-script through a dozen proxy servers scattered across Zurich and Tokyo, feeding the corporate system a loop of false telemetry. To the IT security team at Sterling headquarters, it would look like an amateur hacker in Eastern Europe was trying to brute-force a login, completely masking the fact that the actual download was originating from the historic Hudson estate just miles away.

In a penthouse office overlooking Manhattan, Marcus Sterling slammed his fist onto his mahogany desk, shattering a crystal paperweight. His silver hair was disheveled, and his expensive bespoke suit was unbuttoned at the collar. Across the room, a young, sweating IT technician hammered frantically at his laptop keyboard.

"What do you mean, you can’t trace the ping?" Marcus snarled, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "It’s right there on the secondary monitor! Shut down the entire server farm if you have to!"

"Sir, we tried," the technician stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The script is bouncing through military-grade proxy nodes. Whoever is on the other end isn't just an ordinary hacker. They’re using proprietary encryption protocols that belong to... well, sir, they belong to Vance Maritime’s legacy defense contracts."

Marcus froze. The blood drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, pale grey. Julian Vance was supposed to be dead at the bottom of the Atlantic, his private yacht torpedoed and sunk in international waters by operatives they had hired. And Elena was supposed to be a broken woman, easily manipulated and discarded.

"Find her," Marcus whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, venomous register. "Find out where that feed is coming from, and send Frank and his team. Leave no witnesses this time."

Back at the Hudson estate, Elena watched the final megabyte of data download successfully. She hit the eject key, pulling the flash drive from the USB port just as her screen went completely black. A cold smile touched the corners of her lips. The hunt was officially mutual.
