Chapter 11

The private twin-engine jet touched down smoothly on the private tarmac near the Hudson estate just as the first amber rays of dawn began to paint the river mist in shades of gold and rose. Elena stood at the edge of the tarmac, wearing a simple white silk blouse and dark trousers, her long dark hair catching the crisp morning breeze. Cradled securely in her arms, Clara wore a soft knitted sweater and stared out at the roaring engines with wide, curious eyes.

The aircraft door hissed open, folding down into a carpeted staircase. A tall, broad-shouldered man with deep dark hair and familiar, tired eyes stepped out into the chill morning air. Julian Vance looked older, his face leaner and etched with the invisible scars of six months spent in deep cover, but the moment his gaze locked onto Elena and the baby, his expression softened completely.

He descended the stairs quickly, his long strides eating up the distance across the tarmac. Neither of them spoke as he closed the remaining gap. Instead, Julian reached out, his strong hands trembling slightly as he pulled Elena and Clara into a fierce, suffocating embrace.

Clara let out a happy little squeak, grabbing a lock of her father's hair and tugging gently. Julian laughed, a rich, genuine sound that echoed across the quiet airfield, before pressing a tender kiss to the top of his infant daughter’s head, and then another to Elena’s forehead.

"You broke into the Grand Meridian in a velvet gown and leaped onto a chandelier?" Julian murmured against her hair, a disbelieving smirk playing on his lips. "Arthur told me the details over the secure line, but I still have trouble picturing my sophisticated wife as an action hero."

"You left me a very difficult puzzle to solve, Julian," Elena whispered back, resting her head against his chest and listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "I merely adapted to the circumstances."

"You did much more than that," Julian said, pulling back just enough to look deep into her dark eyes with profound reverence. "You saved our family. You dismantled the entire Sterling network in less than a week. The federal prosecutors told me your data dump was the most airtight corporate corruption case they’ve seen in decades."

"It was a team effort," Elena replied, glancing back toward the armored vehicles where Hans Meyer and his men stood at a respectful distance, offering silent nods of farewell before boarding their own transport. "The past is behind us now. The empire is safe."

"Then let's go home," Julian said, taking Elena’s hand in his, his fingers intertwining with hers as they walked slowly together up the winding stone path toward the historic estate, ready to begin the rest of their lives.
