Chapter 9: A Dangerous Gambit

Julian stood his ground in the foyer, refusing to flinch under the predatory gaze of his cousin. The two operatives flanking Marcus shifted uncomfortably, their hands hovering near their overcoat pockets, waiting for a command that could turn Beacon Street into a warzone.
"You overestimate your reach, Marcus," Julian said, his voice dangerously low and steady. "If anything happens to those children, the SEC and federal prosecutors will have Clara’s complete financial trail within the hour. Do you really think the board will protect you when the federal indictments drop?"
Marcus’s polite facade faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine panic crossing his eyes. He knew Julian was not bluffing; Julian had always been the principled academic of the family, possessing moral integrity that money couldn't buy.
"You're bluffing, Julian," Marcus spat, stepping closer. "Clara was thorough, but she was alone. She didn't have time to distribute copies before she vanished."
"Are you willing to bet the entire conglomerate on that assumption?" Julian challenged, holding his ground. "Search the house if you dare. But remember, every security camera on this street is wired directly to a secure off-site server. A forced entry by armed men will trigger an automatic lockdown and a dispatch to federal law enforcement."
Marcus glared at his cousin, weighing the risks. The corporate conspiracy was fragile, built on plausible deniability and silenced whistleblowers. A botched raid on a prominent philanthropist’s estate in broad daylight would draw too much public attention.
With a venomous scowl, Marcus stepped back onto the porch. "This isn't over, Julian. You’re harboring stolen property. We will get what belongs to the Vance Institute, and when we do, nobody will be left to protect those brats."
"Get off my property, Marcus," Julian replied coldly.
Marcus turned sharply, signaling his operatives to follow. As the heavy oak doors slammed shut, Julian exhaled a long, shaky breath. He leaned against the wall for a moment, letting the adrenaline fade before turning and heading up the stairs.

Inside the nursery, Maeve unlocked the door the moment she heard Julian’s familiar knock. She rushed forward, holding out the silk-wrapped microfilm. "Is he gone?"
"For now," Julian said grimly, taking the microfilm and slipping it into his pocket. "But they know we have it. We don't have much time. We need to get these documents to the Department of Justice before Marcus makes his next move."
