Chapter 13: Turning the Tide

The beam of a flashlight swept agonizingly close to their hiding spot, illuminating the swirling snowflakes inches from Maeve’s face. She closed her eyes, holding her breath, praying silently that Leo would remain quiet.
Suddenly, a loud, deep roar echoed from the ridge behind the cabin—not the sound of Marcus’s operatives, but the wail of sirens cutting through the mountain air. Red and blue emergency lights flashed brilliantly against the snowy canopy above.
"Federal marshals! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice commanded through a megaphone from the access road.
A flurry of panicked shouts erupted near the cabin. Flashlights whipped around erratically as Marcus’s operatives realized they had walked into a federal trap. Gunfire did not break out; the operatives knew the game was over the moment federal law enforcement secured the perimeter.
Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, lowering his weapon. He looked down at Maeve, offering a reassuring smile. "It’s over, Maeve. The marshals are here."
Minutes later, federal agents in tactical gear swept the ravine, securing Julian, Maeve, Sterling, and the infant. As they were escorted back up to the road, Maeve watched as Marcus Vance’s operatives—and Marcus himself, handcuffed and furious—were led out of the stone cabin and placed into the back of federal transport vans.
Marcus caught sight of Julian and Maeve standing by the warmth of a marshal’s cruiser. His expression twisted with impotent rage, but he said nothing as the doors slammed shut, sealing his fate.
Professor Sterling handed the encrypted hard drive to the lead federal marshal. "All audit logs and financial trails are intact. The grand jury indictments are ready for signature."

The lead marshal nodded respectfully to Julian. "Mr. Vance, thank you. Your cooperation has brought down one of the most corrupt pharmaceutical cartels in the country. Your cousin will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars."
Julian wrapped his arm around Maeve’s shoulders, feeling the profound weight of a multi-year nightmare finally lift from his soul.
