Chapter 10: The Safe House

Recognizing that Beacon Street was no longer secure, Julian put his contingency plan into motion. Within the hour, Mrs. Gable had packed essentials for Maeve and Leo, while Dr. Harrison arrived under the guise of a routine medical checkup, carrying a medical transport case designed to conceal classified documents.
"We are heading to my colleague’s estate in rural Vermont," Julian explained as they loaded into the back of a nondescript black SUV parked in the private garage. "It’s off the grid, heavily secured, and completely outside Marcus’s jurisdiction."
Maeve held Leo securely in her lap as the vehicle smoothly navigated out of the garage and into the snowy city streets. The skyline of skyscrapers faded into rolling snow-covered hills as they drove north for hours. The rhythmic hum of the engine and the warmth of the cabin eventually lulled Leo into a deep, healing sleep. Maeve stared out the window, watching the desolate winter landscape blur past, realizing how drastically her life had transformed in less than forty-eight hours.
By evening, they arrived at a secluded stone cabin nestled deep within a pine forest. A warm golden light glowed from the windows, welcoming them out of the bitter cold. Inside, Professor Arthur Sterling—a retired federal prosecutor and an old mentor of Julian’s—awaited them with a hot meal and a secure communications terminal.
"Julian, my boy," Professor Sterling greeted them warmly, shaking Julian’s hand before offering a kind smile to Maeve. "And you must be Maeve. Your mother was a brave woman. I’ve reviewed the encrypted files Julian sent ahead via secure satellite. The evidence is airtight."
Maeve sat at the wooden dining table, a bowl of stew steaming before her. "Can they really put the bad men in prison?" she asked earnestly, looking between Julian and the professor.
Arthur Sterling sat down across from her, his expression serious yet reassuring. "With this evidence, Maeve, we can dismantle the corporate conspiracy from the top down. But we have to move carefully. Marcus Vance has powerful friends in Washington, and we need to present the case directly to the Attorney General before they catch up to us."

Julian pulled the microfilm from his pocket, placing it gently on the table. "The final piece of the puzzle is right here. Tomorrow morning, we transmit the decrypted files directly to the federal grand jury."
For the first time since her mother disappeared, Maeve felt a flicker of genuine hope. The ghosts of the freezing alleyway felt distant, replaced by the profound realization that justice was finally within their grasp.
