Chapter 7: Unraveling the Seams

The heavy oak door of Julian’s study was securely locked. The heavy curtains were drawn shut, blocking out the gray afternoon light, leaving only the focused beam of a brass desk lamp illuminating the mahogany surface. Spread out carefully beneath the light was Maeve’s tattered brown coat.
Maeve stood beside Julian, her heart pounding against her ribs as she watched him pick up a pair of precision surgical scissors from Dr. Harrison’s medical kit. Beside him lay a magnifying glass and a pair of white cotton gloves. The air in the room felt thick, charged with anticipation and underlying fear.
"Ready?" Julian asked, looking down at the young girl.
Maeve swallowed hard and nodded. "Do it."
With steady, practiced hands, Julian snipped the reinforced threading along the inner collar of the coat. The thick brown wool parted, revealing a hidden compartment sandwiched between the outer fabric and the inner lining. Inside lay a tightly rolled strip of specialized, archival-grade microfilm, no wider than a postage stamp, wrapped meticulously in a square of oiled silk.
Maeve gasped softly, leaning in closer. "What is that?"
"Microfilm," Julian whispered in awe, using tweezers to extract the delicate cylinder. "Clara was brilliant. She knew digital files could be hacked or tracked across corporate servers. She converted her entire clinical trial ledger into analog microfilm."
Julian carried the microfilm to a specialized slide projector he had set up in the corner of the room. He carefully inserted the tiny strip into the lens, adjusting the focus until a massive, sharp image projected onto the blank white wall behind the desk.
Lines of complex biochemical formulas, patient trial logs, and financial transactions filled the wall. Maeve watched in silence as Julian scrolled through page after page of encrypted data. Suddenly, Julian stopped on a document bearing the official letterhead of the Vance Institute.
"Look at this," Julian pointed a finger at a highlighted paragraph. "This is the internal memo authorizing the suppression of the respiratory cure. Signed by Marcus Vance, my own cousin and the current CEO of the conglomerate."

The revelation struck Maeve like a physical blow. The man running the very company that had persecuted her mother shared blood with the man who had rescued her.
Before Julian could examine further, a sharp, jarring chime echoed through the grand estate. The front security gate intercom buzzed violently, shattering the quiet sanctuary of the study and signaling that their fragile safety had just been breached.
