Chapter 9: The Threat Unseen

Deep within the Manhattan Correctional Center, Elena sat in the communal recreation area, nursing a plastic cup of lukewarm water. Her trial date was approaching fast, and the evidence against her was insurmountable. Yet, her mind was not occupied with legal strategies or remorse. Instead, her dark eyes burned with a singular, consuming obsession: revenge.
She had managed to smuggle a short message out through a corrupt corrections officer, contacting an old associate who remained on the outside. The instruction was simple, cold, and precise: ensure that the girl who ruined everything—Clara—learned that actions have permanent consequences, even when hidden behind protective walls.
Back at the estate, Clara felt a sudden, inexplicable chill as she walked through the dimly lit hallway leading to the back garden. The rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, autumn evening with shadows stretching long across the polished hardwood floors. She shook off the uneasy feeling, reminding herself that Elena was behind bars, locked away from the world.
She stepped outside into the courtyard, taking a deep breath of the fresh night air. The silver cake stand from the gala had been discarded in the storage shed, but the memory of that multi-tiered white cake and the pink frosting roses remained vivid in her mind. It was a turning point—a moment where her childhood ended and a harsh, adult reality took its place.
As she walked along the stone path, a sudden movement near the perimeter hedge caught her eye. A shadow detached itself from the dense foliage, moving with silent, deliberate speed toward the rear patio doors of the house. Clara froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Hello?" she called out cautiously, her voice trembling slightly.
The shadow stopped. A man turned around, his face half-obscured by the hood of a dark jacket. He held a small, metallic package wrapped in brown paper, tossing it lightly from one hand to the other before dropping it onto the stone patio right by the back door. Without a word, he turned and sprinted toward the perimeter wall, vaulting over it into the alleyway beyond before Clara could even draw a full breath.
