Chapter 2: The Digital Proof

The tiny screen of the smartphone illuminated the tense space between Julian and Clara with an unforgiving, ghostly light. On the display, the high-definition footage showed the back corner of the grand catering kitchen just an hour prior. Elena’s silhouette was unmistakable, draped in her black one-shoulder dress as she leaned stealthily over the silver cake stand. With practiced, cold efficiency, she withdrew a small amber vial from her clutch and tipped a colorless, viscous liquid directly into the middle tier of the white celebration cake. The video caught the exact moment she stirred the deadly substance into the frosting with a silver spatula before quickly checking her surroundings and walking away.
Julian stared at the screen, the color draining entirely from his face. His dark styled hair seemed to frame a visage frozen in sudden, terrifying comprehension. The furious anger that had defined his posture moments ago evaporated, replaced by a cold, heavy numbness that settled deep into his chest. He turned his head slowly, his gaze shifting from the glowing phone screen to the woman standing beside him.
Elena’s face, which had been locked in a confident sneer, instantly shattered. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin a sickly, pale grey. Her dark eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing horror as she realized her meticulously planned crime had been laid completely bare. Her mouth opened in a silent gasp, but no words came forth. The defensive posture she had maintained moments ago crumbled, her shoulders collapsing inward as the weight of undeniable guilt crushed her composure.
"Elena..." Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. "What is this?"
"It... it's a deepfake, Julian!" Elena stammered, her voice pitching upward in panic as she desperately grasped at straws. "Technology can generate anything these days! You can't possibly believe that a jealous child—"
"Quiet!" Julian commanded, the single word carrying the force of a thunderclap.
The guests murmuring in the background fell completely silent. The sheer intensity of Julian’s tone left no room for debate. He stepped away from Elena as if her very presence had become toxic, his eyes darting back to Clara. The realization of what he had just done—striking the young girl who had risked everything to protect him—hit Julian with the force of a physical blow. He reached out tentatively toward Clara, his hand hovering in the air, trembling slightly.

"Clara..." he started, his voice cracking with sudden remorse.
Clara stepped back, avoiding his touch. Her tear-streaked face remained guarded, the physical pain of his slap still stinging, but her gaze was steady. She slipped the phone back into her pocket, the blue light vanishing, leaving them all in the stark reality of the ruined ballroom.
