Chapter 6: Confronting the Past

The arraignment hearing was held on a crisp Tuesday morning in downtown Manhattan. The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious onlookers eager to catch a glimpse of the socialite turned murder suspect. Elena sat at the defense table, dressed in a standard gray inmate jumpsuit, her long dark hair pulled back into a severe, unstyled ponytail. The glamorous facade of the black one-shoulder dress and professional makeup was entirely gone, exposing a hardened, bitter expression that she directed straight toward the press gallery.

Julian sat in the front row of the public gallery, flanked by Arthur and Clara. He kept his expression neutral, refusing to grant Elena the satisfaction of acknowledging her presence. Yet, as she was led into the room, her cold eyes locked onto Julian’s, lingering for a fraction of a second with a look of pure, unadulterated contempt. She didn't look remorseful; she looked angry that her plan had failed.

When the judge asked for her plea, Elena’s defense attorney stood and entered a plea of not guilty, citing entrapment and digital manipulation of evidence—a weak argument that even the defense team seemed embarrassed to present. The prosecution countered immediately, submitting the comprehensive forensic reports, the bank transfer records to Zurich, and the high-definition smartphone video recorded by Clara.

Sitting in the wooden bench, Clara felt a cold shiver run down her spine as she watched Elena across the courtroom. For weeks, that woman had shared their meals, smiled at her across the dining table, and whispered poisonous falsehoods into Julian’s ear behind closed doors. The sheer duality of human nature terrified her. How could someone smile so warmly while planning such cold-blooded destruction?

As the hearing drew to a close, the judge denied bail, citing the overwhelming evidence of financial flight risk and premeditated attempted murder. Elena was led back through the side doors, casting one final, venomous glare toward the gallery—not at Julian, but directly at Clara. That look sent a chill through Clara’s bones, reminding her that even behind bars, the danger had not entirely vanished.

Back in the car on the ride home, the atmosphere was thick with silence. Julian stared straight ahead through the windshield, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel.

"She won't be coming back," Julian said quietly, breaking the silence as they pulled through the estate gates. "Her assets are frozen, her lawyers are dropping her, and the case is airtight."

"People like that don't just stop, Julian," Clara said softly from the back seat, her voice laced with a lingering dread. "She lost everything because of us. Especially because of me."
