Chapter 8: Whispers in the Corporate Halls

While Julian and Clara attempted to mend their fractured household, the corporate world was reeling from the fallout of Elena’s arrest. The board of directors at the firm held emergency meetings to address the severe reputational damage and the multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme. Investors were jittery, demanding transparency and accountability from Julian, who was forced to defend his leadership decisions in high-stakes boardroom showdowns.

Arthur stood by Julian’s side through every grueling session, acting as a buffer between the panicked investors and Julian’s exhausted resolve. Yet, even behind closed boardroom doors, murmurs and gossip circulated. People whispered about the gala night—the ruined white cake, the shattered frosting, the teenage girl who exposed the socialite assassin with a smartphone video.

During a brief recess, Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the forty-fifth floor, looking down at the crawling ants of Manhattan traffic. The sprawling city felt immense, cold, and entirely indifferent to human suffering.

"You're carrying too much of this, Julian," Arthur said, walking up beside him and handing him a fresh cup of black coffee. "The board is satisfied with the audit, and the criminal charges against Elena are ironclad. You don't need to punish yourself every single day."

"I let her into the heart of this company, Uncle Arthur," Julian said, his voice tight with lingering frustration. "I gave her access to the accounts, the contracts, the private meetings. If Clara hadn't been paying attention... if she hadn't recorded that video... I wouldn't be standing here right now. I'd be in a cemetery."

"Then be grateful for Clara," Arthur urged gently. "Stop focusing on your failure to see through Elena’s lies, and start appreciating the extraordinary loyalty and courage of the girl who saved your life."

"I am grateful," Julian murmured, staring into his coffee cup. "Every single day. But every time I look at her, I remember how easily I dismissed her. I remember hitting her face. That's a memory that doesn't just fade away because a judge denied bail."

"Guilt is a heavy coat, Julian," Arthur warned. "If you wear it forever, you'll drown in your own remorse. Clara doesn't want a broken, guilt-ridden guardian. She wants someone who is actually present."
