A Crack in the Ice

James visited the factory on a rainy afternoon. Their marriage had been strained to the breaking point. He stood awkwardly near the loading dock, holding an umbrella, watching his wife haul a heavy canvas bin of fabric scraps.

He didn't recognize her. The arrogant woman who had humiliated his mother at the dinner table was gone. In her place was a quiet, exhausted worker with grease on her cheek and a quiet dignity in her posture.

“Let me help you with that,” James offered, reaching for the bin.

“I’ve got it, James,” Victoria said, hoisting it herself. She looked at him, her eyes clear. “I need to do this myself. I need to pay it back.”

James stared at her, seeing a glimmer of the woman he had fallen in love with years ago, before the money and the status had poisoned them both. “My mother… she’s tough on you.”

“She’s saving my life,” Victoria replied softly.
