Victory and Vulnerability

The counter-strike worked. By Friday afternoon, the conglomerate’s hostile bid collapsed under the weight of Sterling’s united front and restructured finances. The company was safe.

In the quiet aftermath, Victoria found herself alone in Eleanor’s study. Eleanor poured two glasses of expensive bourbon and handed one to her daughter-in-law.

“You saved the company, Victoria,” Eleanor said quietly.

Victoria took the glass, her hands trembling slightly. “I was so afraid of being nothing, Eleanor. I came from nothing, and when I married James, I felt like an imposter in this world. I thought if I had the clothes, the parties, the power, I would finally belong. I’m so sorry.”

Eleanor stepped forward and did something she hadn't done in years. She pulled Victoria into a tight, motherly embrace. “You belong here because of what is in your heart, Victoria. Not what is in your bank account.”
