A Place at the Table

The crystal chandelier in the dining room glowed warmly, casting a soft light over the long oak table. It was another dinner party, exactly two years after the one that had shattered their lives.
The guests were not wealthy socialites or hollow politicians. Seated around the table were Harris the foreman, Maria and her nursing-student daughter, James, and a few other key members of the factory floor.
Victoria emerged from the kitchen. She wasn't wearing a designer gown. She was wearing a simple, elegant dress, and over it, tied securely around her waist, was a crisp, white apron. She carried a massive tray of roasted vegetables, laughing at a joke James had just told.
At the head of the table, Eleanor sat watching the scene. Her heart swelled with an overwhelming sense of peace.

Victoria set the food down and looked down the length of the table at Eleanor. Their eyes met, sharing a silent, profound understanding of the journey they had taken together. The arrogance and resentment of the past were dead and buried. In their place grew genuine respect, humility, and love.
“Dinner is served,” Victoria smiled, untying her apron and taking her seat next to her family. The real family.
