Chapter 8: The Boardroom Confrontation

By noon, Elena and Detective Miller arrived at the towering glass-and-steel headquarters of Sterling Enterprises in downtown Chicago. The monolithic skyscraper towered over the city skyline, a monument to her family's century-old industrial empire. As Elena stepped out of her town car, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer over her black dress, the doormen nodded respectfully, though whispers instantly rippled through the lobby reception desk. Word of the estate eviction had already breached the corporate rumor mill.
She bypassed the private elevator queue, swiping her master security badge to access the executive floor directly. The silence on the forty-fifth floor was palpable. The executive boardroom doors were closed, muffled voices leaking through the soundproofed mahogany panels. Elena didn't bother knocking. She grasped the brass handle and shoved the heavy doors wide open.
Inside, Julian sat at the head of the long conference table, flanked by three senior board members—men who had served her father loyally for decades before aligning themselves with Julian’s ambitious vision. Julian looked disheveled, his beige sweater replaced by a sharp navy suit, though dark circles under his eyes betrayed a sleepless night.
""Elena,"" Julian said, standing up sharply from his chair, a desperate attempt to regain his authoritative posture. ""You have no business being here. This is a closed executive session.""
""Sit down, Julian,"" Elena commanded, her voice cutting through the room like a razor. She strode into the center of the room, Detective Miller stepping quietly behind her like a shadow. ""The only person who shouldn't be in this room is you.""
""Security!"" Julian barked toward the doorway. ""Remove these intruders!""
""Security won't be answering your calls today, Mr. Thorne,"" Detective Miller stepped forward, flashing a gold badge case stamped with federal authority. ""Detective Miller, Financial Crimes Division. Mr. Thorne, you are currently under investigation for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and the systematic falsification of trust documents.""
A collective gasp rippled through the board members. Arthur Vance, the oldest director at the table, stood up slowly, his hands trembling slightly as he clutched the edge of the table. ""Fraud? Julian, what is this about? You assured us the restructuring plan was fully authorized by Elena!""
""It's a lie!"" Julian shouted, his face flushing a deep, mottled crimson as panic finally broke through his cool facade. ""She’s fabricating these charges because she abandoned her duties and wants to sabotage the company's expansion!""
Elena tossed a thick manila folder directly onto the center of the mahogany table, the papers sliding across the polished wood to stop right in front of Arthur.
""Read page twelve, Arthur,"" Elena said calmly. ""That's Julian’s signature forging my father’s name on a multi-million-dollar equity transfer to an offshore shell company registered in the Caymans. And look at page twenty-four—that's the authorization to strip Ethan’s trust fund to cover his personal margin calls.""

Arthur picked up the documents, his eyes scanning the lines of text with mounting horror. The silence in the boardroom became absolute.
