Chapter 10: The Shadow of an Accomplice

With Julian behind bars awaiting arraignment, Elena returned to the mansion late that afternoon, hoping for a moment of quiet peace. But peace was a luxury she couldn't afford just yet. As her town car rolled through the iron security gates, she noticed a sleek black sedan parked near the fountains—a vehicle belonging to Claire’s private legal counsel, or so she initially assumed.
Stepping out into the crisp autumn air, Elena walked up the grand stone steps and pushed open the front doors. The foyer was empty, but a soft, muffled sound drifted from the formal drawing room down the hall. Moving silently across the Persian rug, Elena peered through the slightly ajar double doors.
Claire stood by the antique writing desk, furiously shredding documents into a portable cross-cut machine she had apparently brought with her. Scattered across the mahogany surface were medical files, legal guardianship petitions, and financial statements bearing the Sterling letterhead.
""What do you think you're doing?"" Elena’s voice cut through the room like a whip.
Claire jumped, dropping a fistful of paper onto the floor. She spun around, her blonde hair catching the light as she forced a defensive sneer onto her lips. ""I have every right to collect my personal belongings, Elena. Your security guards let me in to retrieve the baby's nursery supplies.""
""Shredding documents isn't packing baby supplies, Claire,"" Elena said, stepping fully into the drawing room and blocking the exit toward the hallway. ""Step away from that desk.""
""You can't touch me,"" Claire snapped, her voice rising sharply. ""Julian may have been stupid enough to get caught, but I kept my hands clean. Every document on this desk was legally filed under my name as part of the auxiliary trust administration.""
""Auxiliary trust that was established using embezzled funds?"" Elena challenged, closing the distance between them with measured, deliberate steps. ""Detective Miller is already running forensics on the shell companies. Do you really think your name isn't on the wire transfer receipts?""
Panic flickered in Claire’s blue eyes for a fraction of a second before she masked it behind a cold facade. She reached down, snatching a single manila folder from the desk and clutching it tightly against her chest. ""You'll never get your hands on this, Elena. This proves the boy was never legally adopted by your brother. He has no claim to the estate, no claim to the trust, and no right to be here.""
Elena stopped just inches away from her, towering over the smaller woman with an intensity that made Claire recoil. ""Ethan was loved by my brother, and he is protected by me. That supersedes any forged paper you're clutching.""
Before Claire could react, Elena snatched the folder straight from her grip with a swift, practiced motion. Claire gasped, lunging forward to grab it back, but Elena held it high out of reach, flipping it open to scan the contents under the chandelier light.

As her eyes scanned the top document, the blood drained from Elena's face. It wasn't just a guardianship petition. It was a confidential medical evaluation—one stamped by a private psychiatric clinic, dated just two weeks before her return.
