Chapter 6: The Digital Audit Unveils the Theft

The glow of the laptop screen cast a harsh blue light across Elena’s tired face as she scrolled through the sprawling web of financial transactions. Each click revealed a new layer of deception. Julian had not only manipulated trust agreements; he had forged signatures on real estate deeds, offshore accounts, and corporate equity distributions. It was a textbook corporate hostile takeover executed from within the family circle, timed perfectly to coincide with Elena’s overseas assignments.

Her phone buzzed violently against the mahogany desk. It was an incoming call from Marcus Vance, the senior partner at Sterling & Associates Legal Counsel, and a man who had served her family faithfully for four decades. Elena swiped to answer, pressing the device to her ear.

""Elena, thank God,"" Marcus’s gravelly voice came through the speaker, heavy with stress. ""I’ve been trying to reach you all afternoon. The security gates at your estate just tripped our remote monitoring system. Are you alright? Word is circulating through the board that Julian locked you out of the corporate portal.""

""It's the other way around, Marcus,"" Elena replied, her voice steady and resolute. ""I locked him and Claire out of the house ten minutes ago. But that's the least of our problems. I'm looking at the ledger right now. Julian has funneled nearly four million dollars into an unlisted Cayman account over the last three months.""

A sharp intake of breath hissed through the phone. ""Four million? Good grief. I knew he was ambitious, but outright embezzlement crosses into federal criminal territory. Elena, we need to file an immediate injunction and freeze those accounts before he manages to transfer the funds to an untraceable jurisdiction.""

""Do it,"" Elena commanded. ""Prepare the paperwork tonight. I want a complete forensic audit of every subsidiary company under the Sterling Trust, starting from the day I left for Geneva. If Julian thought he could rob my nephew and leave him on a rug in the foyer, he severely underestimated the consequences.""

""Consider it done,"" Marcus said. ""I'll dispatch our private investigator, Detective Miller, to meet you at the estate tomorrow morning. He has experience tracking white-collar criminals who try to flee the country. Be careful, Elena. Desperate men do dangerous things.""

""Let him try,"" Elena said softly before ending the call.

She closed the laptop and leaned her head back against the leather cushion, staring up at the vaulted ceiling. The storm outside had intensified, thunder rolling across the hills like distant cannon fire. She wondered where Julian and Claire had gone to shelter from the rain. They certainly didn't lack for high-society friends, but word of an explosive ousting from the Sterling estate would travel through elite social circles faster than wildfire. By morning, their humiliation would be public knowledge.

Yet, as she sat in the quiet sanctuary of the study, a nagging unease lingered in the back of her mind. Julian was not the kind of man to accept defeat lying down. He had allies on the corporate board—people who benefited from his ruthless business practices. If she wanted to protect Ethan permanently, she would have to dismantle Julian’s corporate network piece by piece, exposing every fraudulent signature and offshore shell company before he could mount a legal counter-offensive.
