Chapter 5: Sanctuary Behind Closed Doors

Reaching the upper landing, Elena pushed open the heavy oak door to the east wing nursery—a room that had remained untouched since her brother’s passing. The space was bathed in soft moonlight filtering through arched stained-glass windows. She carried Ethan inside, gently setting him down on the edge of the velvet-upholstered daybed. The boy looked around wide-eyed, sniffing softly as the familiar scent of lavender and old paper enveloped the room.

""Are we really going to stay here, Auntie?"" Ethan whispered, his small fingers clutching the hem of his beige t-shirt.

""We are, sweet boy,"" Elena said, kneeling in front of him and gently wiping the remaining tear tracks from his pale cheeks with her thumb. ""This is your home. No one is ever going to make you feel unwelcome here again. I promise you that.""

She stood up and walked over to the antique mahogany wardrobe, pulling out a clean set of flannel pajamas and a warm fleece blanket. After helping Ethan change out of his damp shorts and t-shirt, she tucked him securely beneath the covers, sitting beside him on the edge of the mattress until his breathing slowed into the deep, rhythmic cadence of sleep. Only then did she step away, walking softly across the thick wool rug to the adjoining study.

The study overlooked the front courtyard. Through the rain-streaked panes, Elena watched the dramatic scene unfolding below. Julian and Claire had scrambled out of the mansion, their expensive luggage dragging behind them in the mud as the security gates remained firmly shut. Julian was shouting angrily into his smartphone, pacing back and forth under the glare of the automated security floodlights, while Claire stood near her vehicle, desperately trying to shield her infant from the driving rain with her designer coat. Beatrice had refused to walk, requiring a private security guard to wheel her out in her antique armchair—a bitter compromise Elena had authorized just to get them off the property.

Elena felt no pity, only a cold, heavy exhaustion settling deep into her bones. She sank into the leather wingback chair behind her father’s antique desk, rubbing her temples as the adrenaline slowly drained from her system. Winning the first battle didn't mean the war was over. Julian was prideful, vengeful, and deeply entrenched in the corporate networks of Sterling Enterprises. He would not simply walk away from millions of dollars in corporate assets without a ferocious counterattack.

Opening the laptop built into the desk, Elena bypassed the blocked network by connecting directly through her satellite hotspot. Her screen immediately flooded with unread notifications, bank alerts, and frantic emails from corporate accountants warning of unauthorized fund transfers initiated by Julian over the past ninety days. The numbers were staggering—millions siphoned into shell accounts overseas. Julian hadn't just tried to steal Ethan's home; he had been systematically looting the entire family fortune.
