Chapter 9 - The Steam Tunnels

The heavy iron door of the boiler annex swung open just enough to reveal the pitch-black maw of a narrow concrete corridor descending deeper into the subterranean foundations of the hospital. Clara grabbed a heavy-duty industrial flashlight from a nearby shelf, clicking it on to reveal a beam of piercing white light cutting through the swirling dust and steam.

"The steam tunnels," Clara said, stepping into the darkness without a moment's hesitation. "They connect directly to the downtown municipal transit hub three blocks away. Sterling’s men are watching the alley for vehicles, not pedestrians walking out of the subway maintenance grates."

Tariq stared down into the dark, damp descent, his tailored navy suit and polished leather shoes looking entirely out of place in the grimy underground passage.

"Walk through a municipal steam tunnel?" Tariq hesitated, wiping a drop of condensation from his forehead. "Marcus, we have a car. We can outmaneuver them on the street."

"The car is a rolling target, Tariq," Marcus replied, already stepping past him into the tunnel behind Clara. He hitched the heavy canvas duffel bag containing the ledger securely over his shoulder. "Sterling knows the make and model of our sedan. By now, every traffic camera in the district is tracking our plates. Move."

Tariq swallowed hard, taking a reluctant step off the concrete floor of the boiler annex and onto the slippery, wet gravel of the tunnel. The air down here was thick, smelling of hot iron, stagnant water, and ancient mortar. As they walked deeper into the labyrinth, the distant rumble of the city above faded into a low, vibrating hum, replaced by the rhythmic drip, drip, drip of condensation falling from the overhead pipes.

"How long is this route?" Tariq asked, keeping his voice low as he navigated the uneven footing behind Marcus.

"About four blocks," Clara called back over her shoulder, her flashlight beam sweeping steadily across the arched brick walls. "Dr. Vance had these maintenance access keys made before the city officially condemned the lower levels. The hospital board thought they walled off this section years ago, but they only sealed the upper hospital exits. The underground transit links remain completely active."

Tariq pulled out his secure tablet, tapping the screen to check the remote server connection status. The progress bar for the external data wipe was flashing a blinking warning light.

System Override in Progress: 64% Complete.

"Damn it," Tariq muttered under his breath, his thumb moving frantically across the glass. "Sterling’s IT team is using a brute-force cryptographic key. At this rate, our financial logs will be completely wiped out before we even reach the subway exit."

"Can you isolate the server from the mobile network?" Marcus asked without breaking his steady stride.

"I tried," Tariq replied, frustration cracking his voice. "The corporate firewall is hardwired into the primary building router. To cut the remote access, someone has to physically pull the master fiber-optic cable out of the server rack in the sixtieth-floor data room."

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, causing Tariq to nearly collide with his broad back in the narrow tunnel.

"Then we change the objective," Marcus said, turning his head to look back at Tariq in the dim light of the flashlight.

"Change it to what?" Tariq demanded. "If we don't save the files, we have no case against Sterling!"

"We don't need the server files if we have the physical master drives," Marcus said calmly, tapping the side of the heavy duffel bag slung over his shoulder. "Dr. Vance didn't just keep paper records in this ledger. Look at the back pocket, Tariq."

Tariq fumbled with the zipper of the duffel bag, reaching inside until his fingers brushed against a small, cold metal object. He pulled it out into the beam of the flashlight—a secure, encrypted solid-state hard drive stamped with the official seal of the federal financial crimes bureau.

Before Tariq could process what he was holding, the screen of his tablet flashed a blinding red warning across the glass.
