Chapter 6 - Beneath the Foundation

Clara froze on the damp concrete threshold of the boiler annex, the heavy canvas duffel bag clutched tightly against her chest with both arms. The rain plastered her dark hair against her temples, and her light blue uniform shirt was soaked through, but her jaw was set with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. She did not drop the bag. Instead, she took one slow step backward, putting her shoulder against the heavy iron doorframe to block the entrance.
"There's nothing in here for you, Director Sterling," Clara said, her voice steady and clear, cutting sharply through the ambient roar of the storm. "These are just personal effects. Dr. Vance left them in my care before he passed."
Inside the unmarked black sedan parked fifty yards away, Tariq watched the standoff unfold through a pair of high-powered digital binoculars. The infrared overlay highlighted the two men in tactical gear flanking Sterling, their hands resting casually near tactical holsters concealed beneath heavy rain jackets.
"They're armed," Tariq whispered, lowering the binoculars with a sharp breath. "Private security contractors. Probably bonded through the municipal transit authority. If Sterling takes that bag, he destroys the evidence, and Clara takes the fall for medical inventory theft."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He reached down, unclipped the heavy leather holster tucked beneath his dark shirt, and pulled out a sleek, suppressed semi-automatic pistol. He checked the magazine with a practiced click before sliding it back into place.
"Stay in the car, Tariq," Marcus said, his voice dropping into an absolute, unyielding register.
"Wait, what are you doing?" Tariq protested, grabbing Marcus by the sleeve of his dark blazer. "You can't just engage private security in an active municipal zone. That's a federal felony!"
Marcus pulled his arm away with gentle firmness, fixing Tariq with a piercing look.
"If we stay in the car, Clara doesn't make it past dawn," Marcus said quietly. "And neither do we. Sterling knows our firm handled the offshore accounts. He’s tying up loose threads, Tariq. This isn't just about a lunch delivery anymore. It's about a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scandal the city health board pinned on a dead doctor."
Before Tariq could formulate an argument, Marcus pushed open the car door and stepped out into the blinding sheets of rain.
Down in the alley, Sterling took a slow step forward, the unlit cigar shifting between his teeth as a cold, predatory smile touched his lips.
"Dr. Vance was a brilliant surgeon, Mrs. Davis," Sterling said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Too bad he didn't understand that hospital assets belong to the taxpayers, not to the destitute. Now, hand over the ledger. If you cooperate, I might forget to mention your son's outpatient file when I submit my report to the board."
Clara’s face paled instantly at the mention of her son. Her grip on the duffel bag loosened by a fraction of an inch, the sheer terror of losing her boy's medical access crashing down upon her defenses.
"You leave him out of this," Clara choked out, her voice finally cracking under the immense emotional weight.
"Then open the bag," Sterling commanded, gesturing sharply to the security operative on his left.
The larger of the two operatives stepped forward, reaching out a heavy-gloved hand to snatch the canvas strap from Clara's shoulder.
Before his fingers could graze the fabric, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the alleyway, followed by a voice that stopped everyone in their tracks.
"I wouldn't touch that bag if I were you, Director," Marcus said, stepping out from the shadows of the elevated highway ramp, his suppressed pistol held low and level at his side.
Sterling spun around, his eyes widening in genuine surprise as he stared at the imposing figure of Marcus standing unflinching in the pouring rain.
"Who the hell are you?" Sterling spat, his composure cracking around the edges.

"Just an interested investor," Marcus replied, taking another slow step into the yellow light of the annex door. "And I think we need to audit what's inside that bag together."
