Chapter 11 - The Transit Hub Ambush

The electric utility cart roared around the final curve of the steam tunnel, its heavy tires crunching violently over the gravel as it bore down on them like an iron freight train. Behind the steering wheel sat one of Sterling’s tactical operatives, his face illuminated by the harsh glare of the halogen headlights, while the second operative stood on the rear platform holding a heavy-duty pneumatic bolt cutter.

"Move! Up the ladder, Tariq!" Marcus barked, raising his pistol and firing two precise warning shots into the concrete wall directly above the cart's front axle.

Sparks showered down in a brilliant cascade of white light. The driver slammed on the electric brakes with a high-pitched screech of metal, sliding sideways across the wet gravel before coming to an abrupt halt ten feet away from where Clara stood paralyzed in terror.

Tariq didn't hesitate. He grabbed the rungs of the rusted iron ladder and scrambled upward as fast as his polished leather shoes would allow, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Grab my hand, Clara!" Marcus shouted, reaching out with his left hand while keeping his weapon trained on the driver's seat with his right.

Clara lunged forward, grabbing Marcus’s forearm just as the first tactical operative leaped out of the utility cart with a heavy iron pipe in his hand.

"Don't let them reach the manhole!" the operative roared, charging directly toward the ladder where Tariq was already pushing his weight against the heavy circular steel cover overhead.

Marcus didn't flinch. He holstered his pistol in a flash of movement, stepped inside the operative's rushing momentum, and delivered a devastating, textbook cross-body strike that dropped the man flat onto his back in the mud with a hollow thud.

The second operative jumped down from the rear platform, drawing a heavy tactical baton, but Marcus pivoted instantly, using his broad frame to block the path to the ladder.

Above them, Tariq slammed his shoulder against the iron manhole cover with all his remaining strength. With a loud, metallic clatter, the cover broke free of the asphalt seal, tumbling upward into the daylight and flooding the subterranean stairwell with the crisp, cold air of the morning rush hour.

"Marcus! Come on!" Tariq yelled down from the opening, his silhouette framed against the gray morning sky of the municipal transit station.

Marcus delivered a swift, disabling kick to the second operative’s knee, sending him crashing into the side of the utility cart, before turning and grabbing the rungs of the ladder. He hauled himself upward with effortless strength, pulling Clara up right behind him just as the first operative began scrambling back to his feet down below.

They burst out of the manhole and onto the platform of the subterranean transit hub just as the automated doors of the 5:15 express train slid open with a cheerful chime, releasing a flood of early morning commuters onto the tile floor.

Tariq, Marcus, and Clara stumbled into the crowded carriage, blending seamlessly into the sea of tired faces in business suits and winter coats as the doors slid shut behind them.

The train surged forward, accelerating smoothly down the dark tunnel away from the hospital district, leaving Sterling’s men stranded far behind in the subterranean dark.

Tariq collapsed onto a plastic bench near the doors, pulling the encrypted solid-state drive out of his suit jacket and holding it tightly in his trembling hand.
