Chapter 1 - The Disputed Coordinates

The rain lashed against the sixty-second-floor glass windows of the downtown corporate tower, blurring the neon lights of the sprawling city below into bleeding streaks of red and amber. Inside the high-rise office, the air smelled of stale coffee, cold leather, and expensive scotch. Tariq sat rigidly in his custom ergonomic chair, his tailored navy blue suit immaculate despite the late hour, his eyes locked onto the glowing display of the dual monitors. Beside him, Marcus shifted his broad shoulders inside his dark blazer, crossing his arms with a heavy sigh that rattled the quiet room. On the screen, the grainy feed from the basement security camera of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital showed Clara in her light blue uniform shirt, carefully arranging small plastic lunch containers inside the industrial refrigerator.
Tariq leaned forward, his manicured fingers drumming a sharp, impatient rhythm against the mahogany desk.
"There, we found her," Marcus said softly, his voice a low rumble that barely carried over the steady hum of the server racks in the corner.
Tariq narrowed his gaze, studying the timestamp in the corner of the video feed.
"Where is she going?" Tariq asked, his tone clipped and tight, carrying the weight of a man accustomed to having immediate answers to complex financial equations.
"She is not going anywhere," Marcus replied, his tone flat and unyielding. "That is her third shift this week, Tariq. She clocked out forty minutes ago. She stayed behind on her own time."
Tariq shook his head, running a hand over his neatly trimmed beard.
"This is completely inefficient," Tariq argued, turning his head sharply to look at his partner. "We are spending thousands tracking her routine under the corporate audit mandate, and she is just playing delivery girl in a basement kitchen? It makes zero business sense. We need to shut this whole operation down tonight and reallocate those security assets to the downtown logistics hub."
Marcus did not flinch. He held Tariq’s intense gaze with steady, unwavering eyes.
"You always reduce everything to a spreadsheet, Tariq," Marcus snapped back, his voice rising just enough to cut through the quiet room. "You cannot measure human desperation with a profit margin. She isn't breaking laws, and she isn't hurting anyone."
"She is a liability," Tariq shot back, his voice sharp. "If the board finds out our private intelligence firm is wasting hours watching a hospital custodian pack Tupperware, our contracts are finished. We pull the team off her right now, or I call corporate compliance myself."
Marcus leaned in close, his face hardening into a scowl.
"You do that, and you will miss the real reason I had you look at these tapes in the first place," Marcus whispered coldly.
"What are you talking about?" Tariq demanded.
Marcus pointed a thick finger at the monitor, where Clara had just opened one of the containers to read a handwritten note that said "LONG NIGHT. EAT SOMETHING."
"She isn't taking them home," Tariq muttered, his voice dropping an octave as a sudden realization crossed his face.
Marcus nodded slowly, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth.

"She didn't write that note, Tariq," Marcus said quietly. "Look at the handwriting. It belongs to the chief surgeon who died in the ICU three days ago."
