Chapter 6

Julian crossed the ballroom floor with desperate, hurried strides, completely ignoring the curious glances of the remaining wedding guests who sensed that the fairy tale had violently devolved into a corporate disaster. He reached Clara and grabbed her by the bare shoulders, his fingers digging in with a frantic urgency that made her wince. The veneer of easy charm that had always defined Julian was completely shattered, replaced by the hollow, wide-eyed panic of a man who had just realized he was standing on a trapdoor with the lever already pulled.
"Clara, we have a massive problem," Julian stammered, his voice pitching slightly upward as he stared into her pale, terrified face. "I just tried to log into my primary investment account to clear the catering invoice, and it's completely locked. All of our cards are declining. I tried calling my mother, but her assistant answered and told me she’s boarding a private flight back to the family estate."
Clara pulled away from his grip, her eyes flashing with a mixture of betrayal and blistering fury. The shock of Marcus’s revelation was rapidly morphing into an aggressive, defensive rage directed entirely at the man who had lied to her by omission. She didn't care about the wedding anymore; her pristine reputation, her social standing, and her comfortable future were evaporating before her eyes, and Julian was the architect of their mutual downfall.
"You idiot," Clara hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper so the remaining guests wouldn't hear. She jabbed a manicured finger into the stiff lapel of his black tuxedo. "You told me your family’s money was placed in an irrevocable trust that you controlled! You told me Eleanor was just a figurehead with sentimental shares! You never mentioned that she could wipe us out with a single phone call because you couldn't be bothered to show her basic human respect today!"

Julian flinched under her verbal assault, his face flushing with embarrassment and rising anger. "How was I supposed to know she would react like this over a minor seating preference?" he shot back defensively, though his voice lacked conviction. "She’s always been eccentric, living in that drafty old house and wearing those cheap blue dresses. I thought once we got married, she would finally step back and let us live our lives without her hovering over us like a ghost."
"She owns the building we are standing in, Julian!" Clara snapped back, her voice rising dangerously close to a shriek before she violently reined herself in, taking a ragged, trembling breath. "She owns the trust, she owns the properties, and as of five minutes ago, she owns our entire future. Go after her. Fix this. I don't care how you do it, but you crawl back to that old woman, you beg for her forgiveness, and you get those accounts unlocked before the venue security physically throws us out onto the street."
