Chapter 13

Back in the diner, the neon sign flickered weakly in the harsh morning light as Clara and Julian stared blankly across the sticky table, the silence between them heavy with mutual recrimination. The waitress, an older woman with tired eyes and a kind, weathered face, walked over and dropped a paper check onto the table without a word, sliding it past the chipped mugs.

"Twenty-four dollars and fifty cents," the waitress said quietly, looking down at Clara’s ruined, soot-stained white lace gown and Julian’s wrinkled tuxedo with a gaze that had seen every version of human tragedy imaginable. "Take your time, but we close the breakfast shift at ten."

Julian checked his pockets instinctively, pulling out a crumpled receipt, a broken toothpick, and a single, useless business card from an investment firm that had severed ties with him less than twelve hours ago. He looked up at Clara, his face pale and defeated. "I don't have any cash, Clara. Not a single dollar. All our cards are blocked, and my digital wallet is completely locked."

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving with a mixture of disbelief and blinding fury. She reached down to the hem of her expensive wedding gown, ripped at the torn lace lining until a long strip of fabric came free in her hands, and threw it across the table into his lap. "Is this what your life amounts to, Julian? Is this the great Bennett empire you bragged about for three years? We are sitting in a rat-infested diner on the wrong side of the city, and we can't even pay for a cup of coffee!"

"Stop it, Clara!" Julian snapped back, his voice finally breaking as the stress of the past twenty-four hours fractured his remaining defenses. He slammed his fists down on the table, making the coffee mugs rattle violently against the formica surface. "You think you're so superior, but you were just as happy to spend the money without asking where it came from! You treated my mother like dirt because she didn't fit your aesthetic! This is just as much your fault as it is mine!"

The diner fell dead silent. A truck driver in a faded flannel shirt sitting in the corner booth turned and stared at them with undisguised contempt. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as she realized the brutal, inescapable truth of his words. She had engineered her own downfall through sheer arrogance and a complete lack of basic human decency. She had looked down on a woman who wore a simple blue lace dress, failing to recognize that beneath that modest exterior lay the power to crush an empire with a single phone call.
