Chapter 5: The Descent into Reality

"That's impossible," Clara whispered, her voice losing its sharp edge, replaced by a sudden, frantic disbelief. She took a step toward Marcus, her white satin shoes clicking sharply against the floor. "You must be mistaken. Call the finance department. Call whoever authorized this stupid joke. My husband is Julian Bennett; his mother is just a sweet, harmless old lady who knits sweaters and stays out of our way. She doesn't own this venue!"
Marcus closed the leather binder with a sharp snap that echoed loudly in the cavernous ballroom, making several nearby guests turn their heads in confusion. The illusion of an exclusive, untouchable fairy-tale wedding was rapidly evaporating into the harsh, glaring light of financial ruin. Marcus looked at Clara not with anger, but with a detached pity that stung worse than outright hostility.
"Mrs. Bennett, respectfully, you clearly have no idea who writes the checks that fund your lifestyle," Marcus said, his voice quiet but devastatingly clear. "Eleanor Bennett isn't just a sweet old lady. She is the founder, sole majority shareholder, and CEO emeritus of Bennett Global Properties. This entire hotel, this ballroom, and the trust fund that pays your husband's salary belong to her. When you ordered her to leave this venue, you essentially evicted the landlord."
The blood drained entirely from Clara’s face, leaving her skin the color of old parchment. The words echoed in her ears, colliding violently with every assumption she had made since the day she met Julian. Julian had always portrayed his family as comfortably well-off, beneficiaries of generational wealth, but he had systematically downplayed his mother’s active role and absolute control over the family fortune, preferring to bask in the reflected glory of an empire he had done nothing to build. Clara’s knees felt weak, and she was forced to reach out and steady her hand against the polished mahogany of a nearby pillar to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

"Where is Julian?" Clara asked, her voice cracking slightly as panic finally overrode her pride. She scanned the thinning crowd once more, her chest heaving beneath the tight lace of her bodice. "Find my husband right now. Tell him what's happening."
Before Marcus could answer, the heavy oak doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open, and Julian hurried inside. His black tuxedo jacket was slightly rumpled, his black bowtie slightly askew, and his face was drained of all color. He bypassed the remaining guests entirely, his eyes locked desperately on Clara, carrying a look of terror that confirmed every nightmare Clara was currently experiencing. Bennett Global Properties was pulling the plug, and they were about to fall from the very top of the world.
