Chapter 6 - Midnight Liberation

The ink of Clara’s signature still looked wet against the crisp paper of Evelyn Cross’s contract as the heavy precinct door buzzed open, releasing her into the damp, cool air of the midnight street. A sleek black town car waited at the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the harsh amber glow of the municipal streetlights.

Clara stepped out into the night, wearing a pair of ill-fitting gray sweats provided by the county jail, her bare feet squeezed into cheap plastic slip-ons. The contrast between the pale yellow lace dress she had worn that morning and her current state felt like a lifetime had passed in a matter of hours.

Evelyn followed close behind, slipping her documents back into her leather briefcase with practiced efficiency. "Don't look so miserable, Miss Vance. You’re free. In this city, freedom is simply a matter of having the right partner."

"Partner," Clara repeated the word with a bitter taste in her mouth. "You didn't save me out of the goodness of your heart, Evelyn. You bought half my father's legacy for the price of a bail bond."

"Business is business," Evelyn replied smoothly as they reached the car and the driver popped the rear door. "And right now, our business is ensuring that Christopher Hayes doesn't get away with grand theft. Get in. We have a lot of ground to cover before sunrise."

Clara climbed into the leather-lined interior of the car, the heater blasting warm air against her chilled skin. As Evelyn slid in beside her, the driver pulled away from the curb, merging into the deserted downtown traffic.

"Where are we going?" Clara asked, pulling a wool blanket from the back of the seat around her shoulders.

"We are going to the resort," Evelyn said, tapping instructions into her tablet. "Or rather, we are going to the administrative annex behind the resort. Security logs can be manipulated electronically, but physical key-card readers maintain an offline backup ledger in the master switchboard room. If Christopher used his military clearance to override the digital server, he likely forgot about the analog hardware registry."

Clara frowned, the fog of exhaustion beginning to clear as adrenaline took over. "You think the offline registry will show who actually checked out that master key?"

"I don't think it will show it—I know it will," Evelyn said, not looking up from her screen. "Christopher is a tactician, not a computer engineer. He planned the digital blackout at eleven-thirty, but the maintenance logs are updated at eight o'clock every morning. If the key was checked out using your ID badge, the physical log sheet requires a manual signature countersigned by the shift supervisor."

"And if the signature isn't mine?" Clara asked, leaning forward.

"Then we have proof of forgery, conspiracy, and malicious prosecution," Evelyn said coldly. "We take that proof straight to the District Attorney before the banks open on Monday morning, and we have Christopher arrested before he can file for emergency trusteeship."

The car sped through the empty coastal highway, the dark silhouette of the ocean crashing against the cliffs to their left. The resort loomed ahead, its sprawling white architecture dark and silent under the pale moonlight. The white wedding chairs from the ceremony earlier that day had been cleared away, leaving only empty lawns and a few scattered rose petals blowing in the wind.

The driver pulled the town car around to the rear service entrance, parking in the shadow of a massive commercial HVAC unit. Evelyn popped her briefcase open, pulling out a small electronic bypass tool and a master override card she had presumably acquired through professional channels that skirted the edges of legality.

"Stay close behind me," Evelyn whispered, stepping out into the cool night air. "If resort security patrols, we are municipal auditors conducting an emergency tax assessment. Understand?"

Clara nodded, pulling her wool blanket tighter around her shoulders as she followed the lawyer toward the heavy metal service door, stepping once again into the world Christopher had tried to lock her out of forever.
