Chapter 3 - The Badge and the Key

Clara turned the handle and pulled the door open a crack. Standing in the hallway were two men: one in the dark navy blazer of the resort’s head of security, and the other in the crisp uniform of the local police department.
"Miss Clara Vance?" the police officer asked, his hand resting casually near his utility belt.
"Yes," Clara said, her voice small. "What is this about? If this is about the misunderstanding downstairs—"
"I’m Officer Miller," the cop interrupted, stepping forward and pushing the door open another foot to establish his presence. "We’ve received a formal complaint regarding an incident of child endangerment and unlawful confinement that occurred earlier today on hotel premises."
Clara stared at him, her disbelief turning rapidly into cold fury. "Child endangerment? Are you out of your mind? I was in this suite all morning. Ask anyone—"
"Actually, Miss Vance, we’ve reviewed the secondary security logs from the service corridors that remained operational," Officer Miller said, pulling a small notepad from his breast pocket. "A maintenance override was used with an administrative master key at 11:15 AM to lock the third-floor laundry room from the outside. That specific master key was checked out under your fiancé’s wedding party credentials yesterday afternoon."
Clara shook her head violently, taking a step back. "No. No, that’s impossible. I didn't check out any key. I didn't even know where the master keys were kept!"
"According to the electronic log, the key was scanned using a biometric fingerprint scanner assigned to your ID badge, which was issued for event coordination," Officer Miller stated calmly, his eyes unreadable.
The room seemed to tilt on its axis. Clara grabbed the edge of the doorframe to steady herself. Her ID badge. She had worn it clipped to her sash during the rehearsal yesterday, but she had taken it off around four in the afternoon and left it on the staging table in the ballroom while she went to the restroom. She had completely forgotten about it for nearly twenty minutes.
"Someone stole my badge," Clara whispered, the pieces clicking together with terrifying precision. "Someone took it off the table and used it to log out that key, then planted the key in my makeup bag, and framed me."
The security director scoffed softly, folding his arms across his chest. "That’s a very convenient story, Miss Vance. But right now, we have a distraught six-year-old child, an officer of the United States military pressing charges on her behalf, and physical evidence placing the murder weapon—so to speak—directly in your personal belongings."
"Charges?" Clara gasped. "He’s pressing charges against me?"
"Mr. Hayes has already departed the property with the child," Officer Miller said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pair of cold, steel handcuffs. "Miss Vance, I am placing you under arrest for unlawful imprisonment and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the metal cuffs ratcheted around her wrists, biting sharply into her skin, Clara looked past the officers into the empty hallway, her mind racing with a horrifying realization: Christopher wasn't just walking away from the wedding. He was building an airtight case to destroy her entirely.
