Chapter 5

The silence in the control room grew heavy, punctuated only by the low, steady hum of cooling fans inside the massive server racks lining the back wall. Lily sipped quietly from her juice box, her big, innocent eyes blinking as she watched the grown-ups argue. Clara stood like a statue behind her daughter, her gaze fixed entirely on Julian’s melting composure. The bruised skin on her cheek seemed to pulse with every beat of her heart, but her expression was one of profound, vindicating peace. The truth was no longer a matter of opinion or social standing; it was recorded in unyielding digital pixels.
Victoria slowly lifted her head, her diamond tiara catching the harsh fluorescent lights of the basement. The heartbreak in her eyes had hardened into a sharp, crystalline resolve. She stood up from her chair, the heavy silk and lace of her wedding gown whispering against the concrete floor. She did not shout, nor did she throw her bouquet. She simply walked over to Julian, stopping just inches away from him. Julian tried to reach out and touch her arm, but Victoria stepped back as if his very touch was toxic.
“A prank, Julian?” Victoria’s voice was remarkably steady, though it lacked any warmth whatsoever. “You accused a six-year-old child of being a filthy thief. You screamed at her mother. You physically assaulted an innocent woman in front of a hundred guests, staining my wedding reception with violence and malice, all while you had the stolen heirloom hidden inside your own tuxedo pocket?”
“Vicky, please, let’s go home and talk about this privately,” Julian pleaded, his voice dropping to a desperate, pathetic whine. He glanced nervously toward Arthur Vance, who had not moved an inch from his spot near the door, blocking any potential exit. “Your father’s reputation, my reputation—think of the society columns, Vicky. The scandal will ruin us both.”
“The only thing being ruined right now is the illusion that I ever really knew you,” Victoria replied, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. She reached up to her head, her fingers tracing the delicate silver band of the diamond tiara. With a single, deliberate movement, she lifted the glittering heirloom from her messy brown hair and held it out toward her father. “Dad, call the police. I want this man arrested for grand larceny, and I want our family attorneys to file for an immediate annulment on the grounds of fraud.”

Julian lunged forward in a frantic attempt to grab Victoria’s wrist, but Chief Security Officer Miller was faster. With a heavy, professional grip, Miller seized Julian’s arm and twisted it behind his back, shoving the groom hard against the concrete wall. Julian let out a sharp cry of pain as a pair of heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place around his wrists, binding his tuxedo-clad arms behind his back. The glittering sapphire cufflinks on his sleeves clinked against the metal links of the cuffs.
Clara watched the arrest unfold without a trace of triumph in her eyes—only a profound sense of closure. She knelt down beside Lily, taking the white cloth from her pocket to wipe a stray drop of juice from the little girl’s chin. “It’s okay, sweetheart,” Clara whispered softly, brushing a tangled lock of brown hair away from Lily’s forehead. “The bad man is going away now. We can go home.”
