THE WHITE ROSES OF PENITENCE / Chapter 2 / 14

Chapter 2

The digital eye of the surveillance camera whirred softly in its motorized dome, pivoting slightly as if acknowledging Clara’s fierce challenge. Julian let out a harsh, barking laugh, attempting to regain his composure as he smoothed the lapels of his immaculate tuxedo. He glanced around the grand ballroom, seeking validation from the sea of tuxedo-clad men and women in designer evening wear who stood paralyzed near the crystal ice sculptures. Victoria remained motionless near the altar archway, her white veil trailing across the polished marble floor like a pool of spilled milk. She reached up with trembling fingers to adjust her diamond tiara, her eyes darting nervously between Julian’s arrogant smirk and Clara’s bruised, resolute expression.

“You want to look at tapes, Clara?” Julian sneered, stepping closer and invading her personal space with calculated intimidation. “You think security footage is going to clear a common thief who sneaks into high-society events? That brooch was appraised at two hundred thousand dollars. It was sitting right on the gift table next to the guest book. The only person standing within arm’s reach of that table for forty-five minutes was this little brat you call a daughter.”

Clara did not flinch, nor did she retreat an inch. She kept her posture upright, her bruised face held high in defiance of his bullying tactics. “Lily was playing with her wooden blocks right here in the corner, Julian. She wouldn’t even know what a diamond looked like if it bit her. You lost your temper because you’ve been drinking since noon, and you needed a scapegoat to cover up your own carelessness. Maybe you dropped it yourself while you were stumbling around the champagne fountain.”

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered wedding guests at Clara’s bold accusation. Julian’s face darkened from a ruddy flush to a dangerous, mottled purple. He raised a finger to point menacingly at Clara, but before he could unleash another torrent of abuse, a sharp voice echoed from the private mezzanine balcony overlooking the grand hall. It was Arthur Vance, Victoria’s father and the primary financial benefactor of the entire wedding weekend. Arthur leaned heavily on his mahogany cane, his silver hair catching the amber light of the chandeliers as he looked down at the chaotic scene below.

“Enough of this public spectacle,” Arthur commanded, his voice carrying the effortless authority of a man who commanded boardrooms daily. “If there is security footage that can resolve this disgraceful mess once and for all, bring it up to the control room immediately. I want the hotel’s chief of security in my private office within five minutes. Victoria, come with me. Julian, stay right where you are.”

Julian’s sudden bravado flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a twitch in his left jaw muscle. He swallowed hard, adjusting his black bow tie with fingers that suddenly seemed stiff and uncooperative. Clara did not wait for further instructions. She knelt once more beside Lily, scooped the frightened little girl into her arms, and pressed the white cloth into the pocket of her green tank top. Together with her daughter safely tucked against her shoulder, Clara walked toward the grand mahogany double doors, leaving the fractured wedding party behind in a state of suspended animation.
