Chapter 14

Six months later, the municipal courthouse downtown was packed to capacity for the final verdict in the State versus Julian Sterling trial. The proceedings had been swift and decisive. Armed with the uncompressed sixty-frame-per-second security footage, Chief Security Officer Miller’s expert testimony, and Victoria’s damning witness statement, the prosecution had dismantled every fabricated defense claim presented by Marcus Vance’s legal team.

Julian sat at the defense table in a standard orange jumpsuit, his hair closely cropped and his arrogance entirely replaced by a defeated, hollow slouch. He did not look up when the bailiff announced the entry of the three-judge panel into the wood-paneled courtroom.

Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, with six-year-old Lily seated quietly beside her, coloring in a brand-new sketchbook with colored pencils. Victoria Vance sat directly behind them, her hand resting reassuringly on Clara’s shoulder. The sunlight streamed through the high stained-glass windows of the courthouse, casting warm amber patterns across the polished oak benches.

“On the primary count of grand larceny in the second degree,” the chief judge announced, his voice echoing authoritatively across the silent courtroom, “this panel finds the defendant, Julian Sterling, guilty as charged.”

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. The judge continued without pause. “On the secondary counts of third-degree assault and filing a false police report, the defendant is likewise found guilty on all charges. The court sentences the defendant to a mandatory term of five years in a state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first thirty-six months.”

Julian squeezed his eyes shut as the heavy gavel struck the wooden block with a sharp, final crack. The sound was not one of rage or protest, but of absolute closure. The legal system had functioned precisely as intended, sweeping away the hollow pretenses of wealth and privilege to deliver unvarnished justice.
