Chapter 13

The press conference was held on the sun-drenched marble plaza outside the Vance Tower downtown. Dozens of journalists, television camera crews, and news photographers crowded behind steel barricades, their lenses pointed toward the elevated podium bearing the Vance Real Estate insignia. Flashbulbs popped incessantly as Arthur Vance stepped up to the microphone, flanked by his daughter Victoria in a sharp navy blazer and pencil skirt, and Clara, who stood quietly beside them wearing a simple, elegant black dress.
Arthur cleared his throat, adjusting his silver tie before addressing the assembled media corps with the practiced authority of a veteran corporate titan.
“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur began, his voice ringing clearly across the plaza. “Over the past week, our family has experienced a very public, very painful trial regarding an incident at the St. Jude Grand Ballroom. I want to state categorically that criminal charges for grand larceny and assault have been officially filed against Mr. Julian Sterling, and our corporate holdings have permanently severed all ties with the Sterling Group.”
A chorus of camera shutters fired instantly, and several reporters shouted overlapping questions about corporate restructuring and legal liabilities. Arthur raised a hand to restore order, signaling for Victoria to take the microphone.
“The events of last Saturday exposed the fragility of relationships built on superficial social status and deceit,” Victoria said, her voice steady and resonant through the public address system. “Too often, society rewards people who hide their misconduct behind expensive clothes and family influence. But truth has a way of asserting itself, no matter how hard powerful individuals try to bury it.”
Victoria turned gracefully toward Clara, gesturing for her to step up to the central microphone. “Today, Vance Real Estate is turning the page on that painful chapter by announcing a major new philanthropic and commercial initiative: the complete architectural restoration of the historic Fourth Street Theater downtown. And I am immensely proud to announce that the lead junior design architect spearheading this multi-million-dollar project will be Ms. Clara Hayes.”

The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding wall of white light as Clara stepped forward to the microphone. She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the natural warmth of the autumn sun against her face. The bruise on her cheek was completely gone now, replaced by the natural glow of a woman stepping into her true power.
“Architecture teaches us that every structure begins with a foundation,” Clara said clearly, looking directly into the camera lenses that broadcast her voice across the city. “If that foundation is built on lies, it will inevitably collapse. But if it’s built on truth, integrity, and resilience, it can weather any storm. I am honored to help rebuild our city’s future, one honest brick at a time.”
