Chapter 7 - The Woman in Velvet

The woman in the velvet gown stopped dead in her tracks, the manila envelope clutched tightly against her chest as if it were a shield. Her dark hair was styled in an immaculate chignon, and her sharp, angular features carried an expression of immediate, calculated panic. Elena recognized her instantly: Catherine Vance, Julian’s older sister and the chief legal counsel for their family’s holding company. She rarely attended corporate social functions, preferring to operate entirely behind the scenes, pulling strings from her high-rise office downtown.
Julian’s posture shifted from defensive to openly aggressive as he stepped between Elena and his sister, blocking the envelope from view.
"Catherine, what are you doing here?" Julian asked, his voice sharp and demanding, losing the polished corporate cadence he usually maintained in public. "I told you to stay away from the venue until the police cleared the floor."
Catherine ignored her brother, her piercing dark eyes shifting past his shoulder to lock directly onto Elena. There was no warmth in her gaze—only a cold, calculating assessment, as if she were weighing a legal asset against a potential liability.
"The board just received an anonymous drop containing the backup server files from Thomas’s terminal," Catherine said, her voice smooth, controlled, and utterly devoid of panic despite the catastrophic news. "Including the encrypted logs from the Cayman accounts. If the federal agents get their hands on those files before we scrub the corporate metadata, our entire partnership dissolves by morning, and every asset tied to the firm's real estate holdings will be seized under RICO statutes."
Elena watched the exchange with a growing sense of numb fascination. The pieces of the puzzle were no longer just falling into place; they were interlocking like gears in a well-oiled machine designed for corporate survival and criminal concealment.
"So Thomas wasn't acting alone at all, was he?" Elena said softly, stepping around Julian to confront Catherine directly. "The embezzlement, the shell companies, the forged signatures—it was a corporate strategy authorized from the top down, wasn't it?"
Catherine raised a single, perfectly sculpted eyebrow, her expression turning glacial as she looked down at Elena’s wedding dress.
"My dear girl, you are standing in a multi-million-dollar banquet hall wearing a dress that costs more than most people make in a year, financed by a firm that has been leveraging high-net-worth client accounts for over a decade," Catherine said coldly, showing not an ounce of remorse. "Thomas was a brilliant technician, but he was weak. When the federal inquiry began closing in, he panicked. He tried to cut a backdoor deal with Agent Miller to save his own skin at our expense. His death wasn't just a tragedy; it was a necessary containment of damage."
Julian closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a long, ragged breath as if wishing he could erase his sister’s blunt admission from the air.
"Catherine, shut your mouth," Julian hissed, glancing nervously down the corridor toward the banquet hall where federal agents were still working. "You are saying too much to someone who has every legal right to destroy us."
"She can't destroy us if she's implicated in the conspiracy herself, Julian," Catherine replied smoothly, tapping the manila envelope against her thigh. "The transfer documents bear her name. Legally, she is an accessory to wire fraud whether she knew about it or not. The moment she tries to point a finger at this family, her own signature on the Cayman accounts will send her to federal prison for twenty years."
Elena felt the floor drop out from beneath her once again. She had thought walking away from the wedding was the hardest choice she would ever have to make, but standing in that hallway, she realized she had walked straight into a family web of corruption from which there was no legal exit.
"You planned this," Elena whispered, horror dawning in her eyes as she looked between brother and sister. "Thomas didn't jump because he was cornered by the feds. You cornered him."
May you like
Catherine didn't answer with words; she simply offered a tight, chilling smile that confirmed every unspoken horror. Before Elena could turn and run back toward the safety of Agent Miller, Catherine reached into her handbag, pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, and dropped it into the pocket of Elena’s wedding dress before whispering a final warning.
