Chapter 11 - Cornered in the Alley

The harsh beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight blinded Elena and Marcus as Julian stepped further into the narrow courtyard, his dark gray suit immaculate despite the driving rain, shielded by a large black umbrella held by one of his guards. The white rose boutonniere was gone from his lapel, leaving only a dark pinhole in the fabric—a small, fitting symbol of the illusion finally being stripped away. His expression was no longer one of corporate coldness; it was twisted into an ugly, desperate fury as he looked from Marcus to Elena.
"So the rat is tunneling from the inside," Julian said, his voice dripping with venom as he took another step forward, the water splashing against his Italian leather shoes. "I should have known you were behind the leaks, Marcus. Twenty years at the firm, and you still couldn't stomach how real business is conducted at the top."
Marcus didn't flinch, shielding Elena slightly with his broader frame as he kept his eyes locked on Julian.
"Business?" Marcus scoffed, his voice rising over the sound of the rain. "Embezzling client trust funds, framing innocent spouses, and covering up suicides isn't business, Julian. That's a criminal enterprise run by two spoiled sociopaths who think their family name places them above federal law."
Julian’s jaw tightened until the muscle ticked violently. He didn't bother denying the accusation; at this point in the dark alleyway, pretense was useless.
"Shut up, Marcus," Julian hissed, gesturing subtly to the two security guards flanking him. "You’re done at the firm effective immediately. Hand over the records you took, and walk away quietly while you still have your pension and your freedom."
"I don't have the records, Julian," Marcus replied steadily, his hand still extended near Elena’s open palm where the flash drive rested. "She does. And by now, Agent Miller’s team has already pulled the server logs from the banquet hall. They know your sister dropped those encryption keys into Elena's pocket to frame her."
Julian’s eyes darted instantly to Elena’s hand, locking onto the small metallic drive glowing faintly in the dim light. A dark, predatory smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"Agent Miller is currently three miles away reviewing the wrong terminal backup," Julian said with chilling confidence. "Catherine made sure of that before she left the venue. Which means right now, in this alley, there are no federal agents, no witnesses, and no rescue coming."
Elena felt her heart skip a beat as the two large security guards slowly advanced, their heavy footsteps squelching in the mud, cracking knuckles and squaring their shoulders as they moved in to cut off any possibility of escape.
"You can't touch us here," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound brave. "If anything happens to us, the federal prosecutor already has my preliminary deposition on file."
Julian laughed—a short, ugly sound that lacked any warmth.
"Your deposition hasn't been filed yet, Elena. Miller’s assistant is still transcribing the digital audio back at the precinct," Julian said smoothly, stepping out from under the umbrella and letting the cold rain soak his hair. "All it takes is one unfortunate accident in a dark alleyway—a slip on the wet pavement, a tragic concussion while trying to flee with stolen corporate property—and the entire narrative writes itself."
Marcus tensed beside her, his muscles coiling like a spring as the first security guard lunged forward, grabbing him by the collar and slamming him hard against the brick wall.

"Run, Elena!" Marcus shouted, struggling against the guard's grip as the second man lunged directly toward her, his heavy hands reaching out to grab the flash drive from her palm.
