Chapter 4 - The Fall from Grace

The glaring blue and red lights flashing from the smartphone screen painted Julian’s face in harsh, flickering strokes of color. Elena stared at the headline glowing in bold white letters across the display: EMINENT ATTORNEY JUMPED TO HIS DEATH FROM DOWNTOWN OFFICE TOWER MINUTES BEFORE SCHEDULED FEDERAL RAID. The words blurred together, swimming behind a sudden rush of hot, angry tears that she stubbornly refused to let fall. She had spent the last two years believing Thomas was a brilliant, devoted corporate lawyer building a secure future for them both, only to discover he was a fraud, a thief, and ultimately, a coward who chose to leap out of a twenty-story window rather than face the music he had composed.

"This is a mistake," Elena whispered, her voice hollow as she backed away from the screen. "Thomas was arrogant, yes, but he wasn't suicidal. He loved himself too much to ever throw it all away."

"Arrogance and cowardice share the same root, Elena," Julian said softly, slipping his phone back into his pocket with a quiet click. "When the walls close in and the illusion of invulnerability shatters, people like Thomas realize they have nothing left when their wealth and status are stripped away. He didn't want to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary wearing an orange jumpsuit and answering to men who didn't care about his Harvard degree."

"And you?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing as she looked past the grief and found a cold, hard survival instinct kicking in. "How convenient for you, Julian. Your primary partner is dead, the firm’s stolen funds can be blamed entirely on a man who can no longer defend himself, and you step into the role of the grieving, betrayed colleague who tried to save the day."

Julian’s eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous intensity. He didn't flinch or look away from her accusation.

"Watch your tongue, Elena," Julian warned, his voice low and razor-sharp. "If the firm goes down, I lose millions of my own capital that Thomas tied up in those exact same offshore accounts. I have just as much reason to want the truth exposed as the federal government does. The only difference is that I have the intelligence to clean up the mess before the press tears the rest of us apart."

Before Elena could retort, the heavy steel fire exit door at the far end of the parking garage creaked open with a loud groan. Heavy footsteps echoed off the concrete floor as two men in plain dark suits and trench coats emerged from the stairwell, moving with the practiced, deliberate stride of federal agents. They didn't draw weapons, but their presence commanded the space instantly, cutting off any possibility of retreat.

"Mr. Vance, I presume?" the lead agent asked, stopping a few yards away. He was a tall, middle-aged man with sharp graying hair and an unreadable expression. He glanced briefly at Elena in her pristine white wedding dress before focusing his attention entirely on Julian.

"I am Julian Vance," Julian replied smoothly, stepping slightly in front of Elena as if to shield her, though his posture remained entirely relaxed. "And this is Mrs. Elena Vance. We were just discussing the unfortunate news regarding Thomas."

The agent produced a leather badge case, flashing it open for a brief second.

"Special Agent Miller, FBI White-Collar Crime Division," the agent said, his voice clipped and professional. "We received notification that you were down here, Mr. Vance. We need both of you to come back upstairs to the banquet hall. We have several questions regarding the financial logs recovered from your late partner's office server—logs that indicate your personal signature authorized several large wire transfers to the exact same foreign entities."

Julian didn't blink, but the muscles in his jaw tightened visibly as a heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the garage.
