Chapter 8: Returning to the Hearth

The return drive to the crime scene felt infinitely longer than the frantic chase had moments before. In the backseat of the cruiser, David Vance sat in sullen silence, staring blankly out the reinforced window as the flashing red and blue lights painted the passing trees in rhythmic pulses. When they pulled back up to the house on Elmwood Street, the front yard was illuminated by massive portable floodlights, casting stark, theatrical shadows across the manicured lawn. Several unmarked detective vehicles and a mobile crime lab van filled the curb, signaling the gravity of the ongoing operation.

Inside the house, Child Protective Services had already arrived. A kind-looking social worker named Claire was sitting quietly with Lily in the kitchen, offering the little girl a coloring book and a fresh set of crayons. Lily looked up as Sarah walked through the front entryway, her small face searching Sarah’s eyes for answers. "Did you find him?" Lily asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper, clutching a yellow crayon tightly in her small hand.

Sarah knelt down beside the kitchen table, bringing herself down to Lily’s eye level. She took a slow, grounding breath, choosing her words with absolute care to protect the child while honoring the heavy truth. "We found where he was, sweetheart," Sarah answered gently, resting a comforting hand over Lily’s small fingers. "And the people who made him stay down there are never going to hurt this family again. You were so brave to tell us, Lily. Your voice is what brought us here."

Lily nodded slowly, a profound sense of closure washing over her small features, replacing the lingering terror that had gripped her heart for weeks. She didn't cry; instead, she let out a long, shuddering sigh of release, as if an invisible weight had finally been lifted from her shoulders. Sarah stood up and walked back out to the living room where Miller and the lead detective were conferring over the newly recovered blueprints. The physical recovery of Thomas’s remains was about to begin, a solemn and grueling task that would require every ounce of restraint and respect the department could muster.
