Two weeks after the trial concluded, Sarah drove out to the suburban cemetery located on the rolling hills just outside the city limits. The autumn air was crisp and clear, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and damp earth. A small, private memorial service had been arranged by Thomas’s extended family to finally lay him to rest in a plot overlooking the valley. Lily and her mother were there, dressed in simple black coats, standing quietly beside the polished granite headstone as the minister offered a final prayer for peace and redemption.
Sarah parked her cruiser near the gates and walked up the grassy slope, keeping her distance to respect the family’s privacy during such a deeply personal moment. She held a single white rose in her gloved hand, intending to leave it at the base of the marker once the service concluded.
