Chapter 7: Cornered in the Dark

The heavy oak door of the basement bulkhead at the back of David’s house remained firmly shut, but a thin ribbon of light escaped from beneath the threshold. Sarah signaled to Miller, holding up two fingers to indicate her position on the left side of the frame while Miller took the right. With a sharp nod, Miller kicked the wooden panel near the rusted latch. The lock splintered instantly, the door swinging wide open to reveal a steep set of concrete stairs descending into a damp, windowless cellar.

"Police! Show your hands!" Miller shouted down the stairwell, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. From the darkness below came the sound of frantic scuffling, followed by the heavy thud of a falling stool and a sharp, ragged intake of breath. A man’s voice, tight with panic and exhaustion, called back from the shadows. "I didn't do anything! He brought it on himself! He was ruining everything we built!"

Sarah descended the stairs first, keeping her flashlight and sidearm trained on the figure huddled near the furnace. It was David Vance. He was wearing a grease-stained work shirt, his hands smeared with fresh dark soil and dried mud. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and darting frantically around the cellar as if searching for an escape route that no longer existed. "It was just supposed to be a lesson," David stammered, backing away until his shoulders pressed hard against the cold stone foundation. "He was going to sell the land out from under the family trust. He was going to take everything."

"Put your hands behind your back, David," Sarah commanded, her voice calm, steady, and devoid of emotion. She closed the distance between them, keeping her movements deliberate and controlled to prevent any sudden escalation. David opened his mouth to argue further, but the heavy reality of the situation finally settled over him. He slumped against the wall, his knees buckling as he slid down onto the concrete floor, offering no physical resistance as the steel cuffs clicked securely around his wrists.

As Miller hauled David to his feet and led him toward the stairs, Sarah lingered for a moment in the dimly lit basement. On the workbench beside the furnace sat a duplicate set of brass keys—the exact match to the ones recovered from the crawlspace beneath Lily’s home. The tangible proof of premeditation lay right there in the open, confirming every dark suspicion the audio tape had implied. David had not acted in a blind rage; he had planned the execution of his own brother with chilling architectural precision.
