Chapter 6: The Brother’s Keeper

The unmarked police cruiser tore down the quiet suburban street, its tires hissing against the damp asphalt as it turned sharply onto Elmwood Drive. Sarah sat in the passenger seat, her hand resting near the latch of her duty holster while Miller navigated with practiced precision. The address on David Vance’s property file was a modest, single-story ranch house surrounded by overgrown shrubbery and a rusted chain-link fence. There were no lights burning in the front windows, but a late-model sedan sat in the driveway, its hood still radiating faint waves of heat into the chilly night air.

"Perimeter is set," Miller spoke into his radio, coordinating the backup units that were currently converging from the north and south access roads. "We approach from the flanks. Standard breach protocol, but keep it contained. We need him alive to answer for what’s beneath those floorboards." Sarah nodded, stepping out into the crisp air as the cool wind whipped her blonde hair across her face. The neighborhood was dead silent, save for the distant barking of a lonely dog down the block.

They moved quickly along the shadowed side of the house, their boots crunching softly on the gravel pathway. Sarah reached the rear sliding glass door first, testing the handle with gloved fingers. It gave way with a smooth, silent slide—unlocked, as if the occupant had been expecting visitors or had just returned in a frantic rush. She stepped inside, her flashlight beam cutting through the gloom of a sterile, impeccably tidy kitchen. There were no dirty dishes in the sink, no mail piled on the counter, but the faint scent of fresh bleach hung heavily in the air, masking something darker underneath.

"Clear," Miller whispered from the hallway, his voice echoing softly against the bare walls. They swept through the living room, checking the corners and closets with methodical precision. The master bedroom at the end of the hall was empty, but the closet door stood slightly ajar. Sarah pushed it open with the barrel of her flashlight, revealing a makeshift workstation set up on a folding table. Spread across the surface were architectural blueprints of Lily’s house, complete with handwritten notes detailing the exact dimensions of the subfloor crawlspace and the acoustic baffling required to muffle sound.
