Chapter 4 - The Unlocked Truth

The heavy click of the deadbolt echoed through the silent house like a gunshot, freezing Elena’s hand to the freezing brass handle. Mark lunged forward, grabbing her wrist with a bruising grip and yanking her back away from the door. "Don't open it! You don't know what comes out when that lock gives way!" he yelled, his eyes wide with a manic terror that made him look completely unhinged. Maya screamed from the top of the stairs, covering her ears as the white door slowly began to creak open on its own, revealing a slice of absolute, impenetrable darkness. Elena wrenched her arm free from Mark's grasp, her chest heaving as she glared at him with unadulterated hatred. "You've been hiding someone in our home for years, Mark. If there is a child in there, I am going to her, whether you like it or not!" she declared, stepping past the frozen silhouette of her husband. The sliver of darkness grew wider, and a foul, metallic scent—like old pennies and damp earth—billowed out into the hallway, turning the warm air icy. Mark fell to his knees, pressing his forehead against the floorboards, whispering incoherent prayers to a God he had clearly abandoned long ago. Elena reached out, her fingertips brushing the edge of the open door, preparing to push it wide and confront whatever nightmare her husband had sealed away. But before she could apply pressure, a tiny, cold hand shot out from the pitch-black interior, gripping her wrist with a strength that defied human possibility, and yanked her violently toward the threshold.
