Chapter 15 - The Last Door

Elena didn't pull away. Instead, she pushed past Mark, ignoring the tears streaming down her face, and slid across the rough hallway rug toward the open white door.

"Mom, wait, please..." Maya whispered from inside the absolute darkness, her small fingers wrapping around Elena's wrist with a firm, living warmth that grounded her completely.

Mark stood up slowly, picking up the fallen white plate and placing a fresh piece of bread upon it before sliding it across the floorboards toward the threshold.

"We stay together this time. No more forgetting," Mark said quietly, his voice steady as the hazmat-clad figures began to ascend the stairs behind him for the final time.

Elena pulled Maya out from the dark room into her arms, holding her daughter tightly against her chest as the men in protective gear reached the landing, raising their containment devices.

"Initiate full structural seal," the automated voice commanded from the hallway speaker, but the red warning lights flickered and died out completely.

Elena turned her back on the approaching agents, kicking the white door shut with all her remaining strength and locking the deadbolt from the inside with a satisfying, permanent click.

The hallway dissolved around them, the floral wallpaper peeling away to reveal a simple, empty wooden room filled with warm, golden morning light pouring through an ordinary window.

Mark smiled, sitting down on the wooden floor beside us, handing Maya the white plate as the sound of distant traffic replaced the oppressive silence of the void.

We were finally home, trapped within the only room that mattered, safe from the architects who built the world outside, knowing we would never have to open the door again.

As the sun rose higher over our small, quiet suburban house, the hallway vanished entirely, leaving only a single white door standing proudly in an open field, locked forever from the inside.
