Chapter 14 - The Final Blueprint
"Don't you dare lie to me!" Elena screamed, lunging at Mark and knocking the white plate from his hands, sending toast and shards of porcelain scattering across the floorboards.
Mark didn't flinch; he simply looked down at the mess with sad, patient eyes, as if dealing with a sick patient he had cared for over a very long time.
"You're having another episode, Elena. The stress of the renovation is getting to you," Mark murmured, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder, his touch sending a jolt of static electricity through her veins.
Elena slapped his hand away, backing up against the wall as memories of the hazmat suits, the fire escape, and the wooden hand fought violently against the smooth, empty spaces in her mind.
"There was a girl in that room. Her name was Lily. And we had a daughter named Maya, damn you!" she sobbed, sliding down the wallpaper until she sat on the rug, clutching her head in agony.
Mark knelt beside her, his face softening into an expression of profound, sorrowful guilt as the white door behind him began to slowly turn its brass handle from the inside.
"They take our memories every time we try to leave, Elena. If we don't feed her tonight, the house resets completely, and we won't even remember each other's names tomorrow," Mark whispered, his voice cracking with finality.
Elena looked up through her tears, watching the white door swing open an inch, revealing a pair of small, familiar brown braided pigtails peering out from the pitch-black interior.
"Mommy? I promised I wouldn't tell, but I'm so hungry," Maya's small voice whispered from the dark room, holding out a tiny, soot-covered wooden hand.
Elena froze, the final pieces of the horrific architectural trap snapping into place in her mind, realizing there was no escape from the foundation Mark had poured a decade ago.

She reached out a trembling hand toward the door, knowing that the moment her fingers crossed the threshold, her old life would be erased forever.
