Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

"Get the keys, Elena. Right now. We are ending this tonight," Mark whispered, his voice stripped of all authority, replaced by a haunting desperation. Elena didn't move; she stood frozen, her eyes darting between her husband and the ominous white door that seemed to absorb the dim hallway light. "The keys to what, Mark? That room doesn't exist on the property deed! There is no lock on the other side of this hallway!" she hissed, her voice vibrating with a cold fury that matched the autumn draft creeping up from the floorboards. Maya whimpered, retreating further down the corridor toward the safety of the stairs, clutching her braided brown hair. Mark lunged forward, pressing his ear against the wooden panels of the door. Inside, the muffled hum of the lullaby had stopped, replaced by the unmistakable sound of soft, rhythmic crying. "Please... it's cold in here," a small voice pleaded from the abyss, sounding so terribly much like Maya that Elena gasped, stumbling against the wall. Mark's fingers clawed at the painted wood, searching for a seam, a hidden latch, anything that would grant him access to the space he had guarded for years. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Lily," Mark wept openly now, his shoulders shaking as the terrible weight of his deception finally broke his spirit. Elena stared at the back of her husband's head, the man she had loved and trusted for over a decade, realizing she was looking at a complete stranger. She reached out a trembling hand and touched the doorknob, feeling an unnatural, bone-chilling frost radiating from the metal. As her fingers wrapped around the handle, the deadbolt inside the door turned with a loud, echoing click on its own accord.
