Chapter 5

"Looking for bedtime reading, my dear?" Isabella’s voice cut through the silent library like a razor, calm, measured, and entirely devoid of warmth.
Clara whipped around, clutching the revised will tightly against her chest. Isabella stood in the doorway, wearing a flowing burgundy dressing gown, her reddish-brown hair falling loosely over her shoulders in stark contrast to her usual severe updo. She did not look angry; instead, an unsettling, predatory calm hung about her. She stepped slowly into the room, closing the heavy wooden door behind her with a soft, final thud that echoed ominously in the cavernous space.
"You stole this," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound brave. "You tricked my father into signing away everything my family built. This house does not belong to you, Isabella. It never did."
Isabella stopped a few paces away, her dark eyes glittering in the dim light. "Your father is a brilliant businessman, Clara, but he is sentimental. He views the world through the soft lens of nostalgia. When we met, the estate was heavily mortgaged, his shipping ventures were failing, and he was drowning in debt. I brought the capital that saved him from ruin. This revised will is simply fair compensation for the empire I rebuilt from the ashes."
"That is a lie!" Clara shouted, taking a defensive step backward until her back pressed against the open safe. "My father’s business was prosperous. He loved my mother, and he would never willingly sign away my inheritance to a stranger."

"He didn't know the full extent of the liabilities," Isabella replied smoothly, closing the distance between them with unhurried grace. "Men like your father prefer to look the other way when unpleasant truths threaten their comfort. And now, you possess knowledge that makes you a distinct inconvenience. Hand over the document, Clara, and we can discuss a civilized arrangement for your departure from this house."
Clara looked down at the parchment in her hands. She knew that if she surrendered it now, Isabella would destroy it, and any hope of exposing the deception would vanish forever. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Clara ducked past her stepmother, sprinting toward the heavy library doors. But Isabella was faster than she looked; with a swift movement, she lunged forward, catching the edge of Clara’s wool shawl. The fabric tore with a sharp rip, sending Clara stumbling forward onto the Persian rug. Before she could recover her footing, the library door swung open again, revealing Julian standing in the threshold in his shirtsleeves, holding a brass candle holder, his face a mask of utter astonishment at the midnight tableau before him.
