Chapter 2

The morning sun filtered through the high, arched windows of the estate, casting pale geometric shapes across the parquet floor of the long hallway. Julian retreated to his private study, closing the heavy mahogany door behind him, leaving Clara and Isabella in the tense expanse of the main corridor. Clara did not retreat to her bedroom; instead, she stood her ground, her small hands balled into fists inside the white lace cuffs of her green dress. Isabella lingered near the entrance to the portrait gallery, her dark purple velvet gown rustling softly as she shifted her weight. She offered Clara a cold, thin-lipped smile that did not reach her eyes.

"You think you have won a momentary reprieve because your father appeared," Isabella murmured, keeping her voice low so it would not carry through the thick wooden doors of the study. "Do not mistake his temporary confusion for loyalty. He is a pragmatic man, Clara. He understands that a household requires a firm hand, not a weeping child clinging to the past."

"My mother’s ghost haunts every corner of this house, and it terrifies you," Clara replied, her voice steadying as the initial shock gave way to a fierce, protective anger. "You can hide her paintings in the attic, you can tear down her curtains, but you cannot erase the truth of who built this life for my father."

Isabella took a slow step forward, her gaze locking onto the scratch on Clara’s cheek. "Your mother was weak, trapped in her own romantic illusions. The world does not reward sentimentality; it rewards power. And right now, I hold the keys to this estate."

Before Clara could formulate a sharp retort, the study door clicked open, and Julian emerged. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deeper than they had been the night before. He looked at the two of them, sensing the silent war being waged in the hallway. Without a word, he walked past Isabella and placed a heavy, protective hand on Clara’s shoulder. The gesture was simple, yet it spoke volumes. He announced that a family dinner would be held that evening to address the governance of the estate and the boundaries within the household. It was a diplomatic compromise, but Clara knew that words at a dinner table would do little to disarm a woman who viewed the entire estate as her personal prize. The battle lines were drawn deep into the woodwork of the house.
