Chapter 10

With a defiant tilt of her chin, Clara stepped around her stepmother, refusing to show fear, and hurried down the corridor to her father’s study. She threw open the heavy wooden door without knocking, startling Julian, who was reviewing architectural blueprints at his desk. He looked up, alarmed by her breathless state, but before he could speak, Clara placed the weathered leather ledger on top of his blueprints. The dust from its cover drifted slightly in the dim light of the desk lamp.

"What is this?" Julian asked, frowning as he touched the cracked binding.

"It is Isabella’s past, Father," Clara said, her voice rushing with urgency as she recounted the housekeeper’s revelations about the Baltimore estate and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the elderly shipping magnate. "She is not who she claims to be. She is an impostor who preys on vulnerable men, and this ledger contains the proof of her former life and her real name before she fabricated her pedigree."

Julian slowly opened the ledger, his eyes scanning the handwritten financial entries and maritime shipping records from Maryland. As he turned the pages, recognizing names of acquaintances from the northern merchant guilds, his expression hardened from doubt into absolute horror. The handwriting matched Isabella’s meticulous cursive, yet the names and dates completely contradicted the fabricated background story she had presented upon their marriage. The realization that he had been systematically deceived by a master manipulator hit him with crushing force.

Before Julian could utter a word, the study door swung open smoothly. Isabella stood on the threshold, flanked by two burly men in dark coats whom Julian immediately recognized as local bailiffs. Isabella’s expression was a mask of cold, calculated triumph, her purple velvet dress catching the amber glow of the study lamps.

"I am afraid your daughter’s obsession has finally crossed the line into harassment and theft, Julian," Isabella said, her voice dripping with false sorrow as she addressed the bailiffs. "She has been stealing confidential family documents and slandering my character to the staff. As the legal co-owner of this estate, I am filing a formal complaint for her removal."

Julian stood up from his desk, towering over the space with sudden, terrifying authority. The meekness he had shown during the initial shock vanished, replaced by the formidable presence of a patriarch defending his bloodline. "Get out of my study, Isabella. And take your hired men with you before I have them thrown off this property."
